991 targa reliability
anyone have a 991 targa daily driver? Am looking at a manual 991, really all over the range between a base, GTS, T or targa. would be daily driving though that would probably be only 5-7k miles a year, and would keep it for 10-15 years. Love the targa look even though it adds a good chunk of weight. I remember the 993 and the 996 having failures with the motor costing $$$ making me wary of the new top which looks even more complicated.

I do not have a Targa....but a 991.1 Cab. . I use my car as a daily driver and I do not think there has been any major engine/tranny issues to make you stay away from the car. As far as the Targa.....though there may be more moving parts, to me it is just a bunch of hydraulics and a computer making thinks work in a sequence of events not much different than my Cab. IMHO.

I daily drive mine all year round...even in CT winters. Its a 2014 that was babied by prior owner who put 1800 miles during its first year and a half, but after that, I have put about 10K a year on it daily driving it. During the spring/summer/fall seasons, my top is going up and down quite a bit....down for drive to and from work, up while parked at work, never had an issue with the top mechanism so far....or anything else for that matter. Been a very solid car.

2015 Targa 4S. 43,000 plus miles, 4 years of ownership as of next month. A wonderful DD with zero issues. Suspension is supposedly set a little softer than other Carrera models. I feel that is a positive for my uses. Love the AWD for the wet and cold. Winter wheel and tire set is a nice option if applies to your climate.

Daily driver in New England. CPO 2015 Targa 4 PDK. Top is bulletproof. I’m up to 51k miles. Have a second set of 19” snow tires for use in season. Top down daily when it’s dry out. Good luck with purchase!

thanks for the replies. seems odd that the targa doesn't seem to be popular but still commands a premium for new ones. this purely a numbers game? local dealer doesn't have any allocations available.

Mine has over 45k on it. I got the car in August 2015 at 13.5k miles, it's a 2014 PCNA launch vehicle.
The Targa assembly continues to open and close without incident, and does not leak.
I use it very frequently, usually 2-3 cycles per day at least, because I almost always want the top open but I never park the car and leave it that way.
Other than expected service issues (tires and scheduled service), I've had:

Other than expected service issues (tires and scheduled service), I've had:
- Warped door panels, both replaced under warranty.
- The worst of my rattles, a "dash rattle" turned out to be the windstop, replaced under warranty.
- Targa bar scratched by a dealer rattle fix attempt, replaced later at my expense (I think it was around $2500 between the part and labor.)
- COV failure on the sound symposer, took 2 visits to remedy under warranty
- Sport Chrono clock has been replaced twice under warranty
- An AC leak. Filled with refrigerant and dye, one year later it's back again to further diagnose.
- Washer fluid hose became brittle and snapped, replaced under warranty.
- Multiple visits to multiple dealers to diagnose and fix rattles (see previous threads for details.)

Its a nicely optioned vehicle that was built at the start of the series and sent to dealers to help "launch" the marketing of the new series. Merely signifies that it was one of the first of those type of vehicles off the line. Such vehicles actually note "Launch vehicle" on the build sheet.
