Default Flywheel chatter

I'm pretty familiar with the sounds that a manual transmission flywheel can make when a clutch is not depressed when a car is idleing in neutral, but my 991.2 C4S seems to be prone to more chatter than I'm accustomed to, primarily in slow speed up shifts between 1-2. If I don't depress the clutch at exactly the right moment, the slight engine rpm drop between shifts results in a little coins-in-a-can sound from the rear. I don't think it's loose heatshield, as the the sound is a bit more resonant than that. Car has 500 miles on it.

Does this sound familiar to anyone else with a MT?

Yes. I hear a clatter with my MT under the same conditions you reference. As an additional note, the sound I hear is the Danes as my departed E46 M3. So I assume it is normal.

Yes, I've heard this same "coins-in-a-can" type rattle since day one in my 7MT Targa. Porsche told me that it was some sort of counter weights in the shift linkage/mechanism. An ex-Porsche mechanic (now owns his own shop) told me that it was the gear lash in the transmission. Not sure if either is correct. They both (at least) agreed, that this was "normal". I'm coming up on 40k miles and am better and operating the clutch in a way that avoids this clatter. Yet, it still does it on occasion. The good news is, that it hasn't gotten any worse over time.

This is a normal sound. Porsche used dual-mass flywheels on the 3.6 engines to muffle this noise, but when you switch to an RS flywheel (single-mass) you can hear it again. I personally like it -- reminds you that you're operating a machine, not a computer. I don't know what kind of flywheel the 991 manual uses, but it's probably single-mass if you're getting the marbles-in-a-can sound.

Cool- appreciate everyone here who weighed in. I assumed it may have had something to do with the dual disk set up of the 991.2, but glad the sound is not abnormal

Late to the thread but also have .2 4S MT. Exact same behavior you describe on mine as well. Once you figure out the timing it happens less and less. I dont mind it, makes the car a little more raw.

Is this a .2 thing? Don’t hear this on my car at all. And I am an accredited noise hypochondriac.

.2 and .1 have different clutch designs, so I suppose it is a .2 thing...

.2s have dual disc clutches vs single disc in .1. Flywheel and shift linkage also different but told the chatter is mostly a byproduct of the new clutch design.

Ah, good to know. I've only driven one .2 Manual Car and it was pouring rain so I wasn't exactly listening for clutch chatter...
