If memory serves there is a spot on the release mechanism/latch that it slides onto. And a little spot for the ball/bowden cable. I would re-install it and then test it before shutting the lid.
You probably already thought of this, but until you KNOW you have it 100% right, I wouldn't close the lid. Instead, I would test it with a screwdriver shaft to make sure the latch releases properly. If you close the lid and can't get it open you'll have a really big problem.

Has anyone had to replace the pistons which keep the engine compartment open? Mine are in need of replacement as the lid will not stay open. 2013 with 18k miles seems early for this issue.
The hood struts failing at 18k miles seems really early. May be a result of being a little rough with the hood...mine is also a 13 and at 47k miles and still works perfectly

My dad and I have been having the same problem with his 991 but with some addition....problems.
After doing an oil change the compartment release cable became loose and we've been trying to put it back in place since the compartment won't open.
Only thing is that while we were trying to put it back into place it broken and THE ENTIRE CABLE came out. we've now been trying to remove the spoiler to try to get to the latch but are unable due to the compartment not being able to open.
Our net step is to probably cut and replace the actual latch on the lid that holds it shut. Is there anything else we can try?

Ugh! I’ve got the same problem. The actuator is working fine and pulling or pushing on the engine compartment cover doesn’t work. I think the cable is disconnected from the latch so the post the leads to the technique using a bicycle cable is my next thing to try. I spoke to a Porsche mechanic that said they made a running change in production to prevent the cable from detaching from the latch. I hope the bicycle cable trick works. If anyone has more pictures on how to do this please post.
Same problem with my trunk lid as well (2013 991.1) Going to work on it a bit tonight and see what I can come up with. Any other recommendations would help but i'll have to see if I can simply fish out the cable
