911.2 C2 as daily driver in NY
What’s up guys? This is my first post and had a issue that maybe you guys can help me with:
I currently have a 2017 Cayenne and I’m looking to trade it in for a 911. I was originally looking at a certified preowned 2015 C4S with like 15k miles on it, but the lack of new tech in the car kind of disappointed me—it doesn’t even have a reserve camera (pointless feature I know, but at 90k price tag it would be nice to have).
The dealer has a 2017 C2 they are trying to move to and it’s basicly the same price as the 2015 C4S. It has the Sport Chrono, Sport exhuast, and a bunch of other interior upgrades.
The thing is I will be using this car as my daily driver and I live in NY (Long Island/Queens) and I’m concerned that the C2 may have issues in the winter months or even in slippery conditions. I’m planning on getting winter tires for cold months regardless.
This is also my first 911 or really any true sports car for that matter. That being said, do you think I can pull off the C2 as a daily driver?

Really depends how much snow you get. And the snow problem won't be because of tires but because of clearance. I know in NY y'all get some heavy snow sometimes and it wouldn't be possible to take the C2 out then. Otherwise, my C2 has been a fantastic daily year-round.

I have a 991.1 C2S Cab that I daily drive between Queens and Long Island. It's my only car and I put around 20k miles a year on it. It's been a blast to drive despite the generally terrible pothole-ridden roads and traffic. In winter, I swap tires for Alpins and have been able to drive through light snow/slush/winter mix etc. my biggest issue as mentioned is clearance on the front spoiler on high snow days. On about 3-4 occasions over the last 2 years, I simply rented a car for a couple days or took an Uber for the bad snow storms. For the other 360 days- worth it entirely to drive the Porsche!

The tires will depend on the amount of grip. In cold weather, the standard summer tires are tricky to drive on, particularly below 40F, so you are doing the right thing with the winter tires. You should not have a problem unless the snow piles up.
As far as using the car on the daily commute, in your area, I'd do the PDK, as you know, LI/Queens can have some rough traffic. Also, as others have said, the 911 can take the punishment, but can you deal with bumper rash, curb rash, door dings and all the other insults it will suffer with that type of daily use, or would you rather save the 911 for weekends? If you have a pristine, safe parking spot, I'd absolutely go for it.
By the way, love, love my base (7 MT, but I was impressed with a PDK test drive). You will love the car.

I agree with Redline991. I daily mine on Long Island also. I got one in beginning of March so it’s been thru rain sleet snow without dedicated winter tires. For the heavy snow fall I do have a winter monste with a little more ground clearance.

Agree with most of the others, just get the real Porsche and don't look back

Go for it. The concern is the road hazards, not the snow. I drive continuously on the Cross Bronx. I will no longer drive my 911 at night as the potholes can't be seen and its just not worth 4k for a new wheel and tire. It was worth piece of mind to pick up a second vehicle. I drove a stripper Camry as a beater for years, the whole set up cost with insurance less than 3k per year. The cost of wheel. I now drive a bigger SUV and could not be more please having as a second vehicle.

I have Alpins on my 991.1 and on packed snow it's not bad. On the slushy stuff or inclines it can be tricky.

my 991.1S s a DD ... I drive it all over NYC. Prepare to sacrifice a wheel or two and some tires (get the insurance!) Be diligent on new roads looking for craters... and definitely buy an SUV as a back up. I bought an 2005 4Runner Limited and run that in the winter...

As an only car, it will be tough. I live in Northern NE and we get a lot more snow and ice. Even with snows in my C4S, there were days I simply could not drive my 911. I also have a Volvo XC60 and with snows for winter., it is much more suited to winter driving when it is sleeting or even on snow covered roads. If only one car, I would pick something like a Macan Turbo instead of the 911.
Also, in cold weather, the 911 creaks and groans a lot. The stiff suspension and the frozen roads with frost heaves and potholes really take their toll. As someone commented, I hesitate to drive the 911 on back roads at night when I can't see the craters in the road.

I have a C2 S MT as a daily drive with Michelin snow tires and the tire insurance. Its perfect for an everyday driver. I'm not driving into city everyday but when I do in traffic its fine! .
