Why is there so little love for the 991.1?

These threads always confuse me. The OP wants real life advice of 997.2 vs 991.1. He has repeated that. And yet there are long threads about GT3's and 991.2's. I am going to take a WILD guess and say that those cars are out of his price range. Maybe I will tell him why I like Ferrari's as well?

No need for a flame suit - I think that’s a fair comment, if a tiny bit exaggerated. The GTS is perfect on the freeway in 4th at around 80mph. The torque there is quite immediate. The 991.2 is just a different car. Less like a Porsche and more like a Mercedes perhaps. Which is nice.
Yes, the OP be a trollin.

You didn't specify your budget in your original post, so you'll get a continuum of opinions along the 997-991 crowd. You mentioned "stupid prices for the 991.2" which I took as stupid low, and they are running high 70s low to mid 80s, which is competitive with .1S and .1GTS.

The ops budget is 997.2 S vs 991.1 base
you cant get a nice 991.1 s with options below 70k
they do not overlap!
a 997.2 base is like 45k
sounds like he is trying to convince himself he can get a 991.1 S for 997.2 S prices lol
yea and I can get a 991.2 S for 991.1 prices
FYI the 997.2 S is a better choice than the 991.1 base my opinion

There have been several base 991.1's listed for sale here in the low $50's and "S" cars in the upper $50's. There are several nice 'S''s offered at Porsche Dealers for $65K (which is my max budget).
I will repeat: I have no interest in 991.2 at the moment for the only reason that they are out of my budget.

I’ve owned a couple air cooled cars as well as a 996 that is arguably the most unloved car of them all .
I personally thought the 996 was superior to the air cooled cars in almost every way.
When it came time to start shopping for another toy a couple years back I was initially seeking a 997.2 because while I like updated designs and advanced engine technology to an extent I’m definitely a huge fan of an involved driving experience where less is more .
I was also very annoyed with the absurd engine bay access of the 991.
When shopping for a 997.2 vs 991 what it ultimately came down to for me was the fact that there are so few 997.2s available that it made finding a low mileage example with the options and colors I wanted next to impossible .
With the 991s being more plentiful on the used market I was at least given a chance to find the right one and ended up with a 2015 base Carrera last year in almost the exact configuration I would have built had the .1 still been available new.
After 9 months I can honestly say that I love the car. What it loses in raw feel and a bit too much tech for my taste it makes up for in beauty and effortless performance and for some reason it feels the most exotic out of every 911 I’ve owned before it.
The engine acess is still rediculous but I have no regrets ....

“Feeding frenzy???” I just did a search on cars.com for 2009 - 2011 911, there are 6 beautiful aqua blue base or S cars, great fun daily or weekend cars, solid reliable, between $36 - 60k on there. It’s a total buyers market for the 997.2 right now! One of the best modern Porsches ever made for less than a new BMW!

Keep in mind if I could purchase a brand new 911 with the option for a regular radio in place of a Nav screen I would go for that 10/10 times.
I find the tech of these modern Porsche’s far too integrated and intrusive to simply be able to “ not use it “
Despite that aspect , I love my 991.1 and find the good far outweighs the bad even when compared to a 997 with it’s more “ old school “ design and feel.

I presume my 981 Spyder to 997 comparison is analogous to the 991 to 997. The Spyder does everything better than the 997. However having owned 911’s going back 30years, I love how my 997.1 combines a bit of an aircooled throwback feel with enough creature comforts to make a nice daily driver (because I’m afraid to DD the Spyder since it’s such a special car and the traffic around here is horrific)

Here's an example of "too much tech" that you can't just ignore. Both my 991.1 and 981.1 have buttons in the climate control for recirculating the cabin air rather than getting new air from outside. During pollen season, which is always severe in ATL, I drive with recirc engaged. But the brilliant computer thinks that's a one-time decision of mine, and that I couldn't possibly want recirc next time I get in the car. So it helpfully turns that off everytime I turn the car off, to prevent me from suffering the indignity of having recirculated air inadvertently next time I get in the car. Of course, ditto the various sport and binoculars button, but I suppose there's some sort of EPA fuel rating advantage to that.
And so, since I often forget to hit that button for a few seconds or a minute, I get a nice load of whatever pollen spores get past the filters, and then when I switch to recirc, they're trapped in the car. Thanks, Porsche!

I hated the 991.1 but i also loved it . At first I viewed it as a huge departure from the traditional smaller platform 911 cars . Having come from 993's , 996's and 997's this 991 seemed like grand touring miniature Panamera at first . The buyers were soft too . Many came from Bentleys and AMG's wheras 997 buyers came from Corvettes and M3's . The price jump was huge from the 997 and those who bought 50 and 60K pristine CPO 911's in the poor economy of 08 and 09 got priced out with 120K for a 991.1 S .
I bought a 981 Boxster S at the time . I felt the Boxster was more of an improvement over the 987 than the 911. the 997 was a very tough act to follow . It's was Porsche's retro but modern effort . In fact at the launch in 2004 of the 05 car dealerships were sold out for months .
That said the 997 PDK SUCKS !!! Do not buy one! It must be a manual . I sold my 09 PDK car the first time I drove a 991.1 in 2012 on the same day !! The technology is antiquated . The NA 997.1 cars did have some engine issues . The .1 Turbo and the entire Gt2 line up is incredible . The 997.2 Gt3 and Gt3 RS are both the most basic and pure 911's that i have ever driven . Love the Gt3's but wont buy one for street use .. almost did TWICE .. just couldnt .
The 991.1 on paper is far superior . it is more comfortable , faster, better handling , and more modern . But it is a very DIFFERENT type of car . After 7 years i have not only accepted it .. i even bought and fell in love with a .2 GTS .! BUT I wont sell my 997Turbo!!Ever !!
