This looks like the transponder I had in my car from the HOA that opened up the gates in my community. If this is a used car you bought....I bet that is what it is. If it is a new car....then I do not know.
Why would removal from the windshield cause deactivation?
If it was being shipped, this is a security measure and an alert is sent. If it's what I think it is then it is a GPS tracker. If it is simply for a neighborhood or parking garage then it should not deactivate if removed - that would be weird and excessive in size for that use.

it was an executive demo, which actually might belong to the dealership principal's community transponder
Yes it will deactivate if you remove it.....There is no GPS sender on these things if it the kind of transponder that opens gates. The battery power if disconnected if you removed it for security reason so that someone who steals it can not open a gate using it.
I know...I used to have them on all my cars.
