Default Going from installed radar to portable?

Had a K40 radar / laser jammer installed on my 09 Targa and loved it. No tickets in ~ 7yrs. Was thinking of going the cheap rout and getting a portable unit( Valentine, escort, etc). Has anyone gone this route and regetted it? Thx.

I have portable unit hardwired to the dome light area with a mirror-tap (it actually taps into the mirror's dimming power). Used a Blendmount for mounting the detector. Not obstructive in any way.

I used this DIY for my install: https://rennlist.com/forums/991/8047...re-of-dog.html

The problem is you will lose any laser jamming capability if you need it in your area. No portable units offer any laser protection - they will let you know after it is too late...

Yep. Laser functionality in a portable is worthless. All it does is tell you that you’ll be getting a ticket in a minute or two.

I've heard/read that the mirror tap is not compatible with a 991.2 - is this correct? Are there any 991.2 owners that have done a mirror tap successfully?

I ran a cord from the detector to the fuse box in the passenger footwell. Took less than an hour, and the detector turns off when the car is off. Mirror would be a bit of a project, and the detector would need to be turned off manually.

I'm running a Uniden R3 on the windshield w/ quint ALP installed, w Stinger as backup for certain times that I don't want a detector on the windshield. It's a very powerful setup. Very few fully installed/remote units will offer you the performance of an R3.

Take a look around in rdforum to get a feel for what'd work for you.

I read that too but it is incorrect. Found that out from a fellow RL’er. Use the blue connector above the forward light panel. On the left side of the blue connector use the black wire for ground, black/red is switched power. Don’t use the purple wire. That’s what I did when I was using the R3 in my GTS and it worked like a champ.

The R3 is awesome. I have one and used it for a few days and then took it down and decided to go with a hidden detector along with laser jammers. I live in a state where radar detectors are illegal and the cops will bust you if they see one, so I’ll use the R3 for my other car when I take trips out of state. That car is a Rice Rocket SUV and there’s nowhere to hide the R3. As I said I’m working on a hidden system for my GTS. Our friend Nick at MusicarNorthwest is supplying the equipment and materials, I’m supplying the installation labor.

Has anyone tried the Radenso Pro M detector? Some of the web sites rate it very highly and it's nice and small. But it's also a bit of an off-brand without much track record.

Took me 15 minutes to install mine using the mirror tap following the DIY I linked above. And I never touch my power button. It comes on when you turn the car on, and goes off the second I open the door (just like the stereo, etc.). Maybe the person who told you this tapped an "always powered" wire instead of the one up in there that is only hot when the vehicle is on?

Was this in a 991.2? Did you by chance take photos of where you tapped in?

991.1. I didn't take any photos since I followed the DIY linked above exactly. Assuming you have a 991.2, just pop the outer cover off between the mirror and windshield and see if your your wires look the same as the DIY. If they do, you should be good to go ahead and order the mirror tap. Or if you're mechanically savvy, you could test with a voltmeter (might need a spare length of wire to test since it's tight up in there)

Same to driver's side. Easy to tuck wires in. No need to struggle with mirror connection.
