Did your 991 come from the factory with rattles?
 

We've seen occasional complaints about squeaks and rattles in 991s as well as Rennlisters who have many miles in 991s that have been as solid and squeak/rattle-free as a 928. I'm curious to see what the percentages look like.

PLEASE do not vote "yes" if you have modified your 991 in any way—that will kill the value of this thread. Instead, let us know about that in your comments (example: "My 991 door started rattling right after I removed the door card to put new speakers in," or "My dash started rattling 500 miles after I lowered the car.").

Please do tell us about your or your dealer's efforts to eradicate squeaks or rattles, as well as how many miles are on your car—and, if you remember, what the mileage was when rattles or squeaks began. If you have photos or videos of the problem or the fix, please post them! I suspect this thread could become very useful for those who are chasing down squeaks or rattles. They can be extremely annoying, and diminish one's enjoyment of the car. You might just have the answer someone is looking for—or they might have the answer you're looking for!

2014 Cabriolet. No rattles.

My 991.2 GTS cab has some rattles. I haven't yet tried to track them down.

Not sure the percentages will be meaningful - but a place to help chase down solutions sounds like a worthy cause - so I'll play!

My 2017 C4S came with an on-again-off-again squeak that sounded like it came from behind the back seats. It was eventually diagnosed and corrected by my dealer. I began to notice it within a few months at around 2-3k miles. It was an improperly installed strut mount they confirmed was a factory issue.

After about 7k miles I began to notice minor rattles in a few places (dash/sunroof/B-pillar) but only when I am driving at speed on really, really poor road surfaces - Interstate 90 beginning about 10 miles east of Seattle and beyond is about the worst surface on the planet - it runs quiet as a mouse everywhere else.

2015 Squeaks passenger side on/off.

2nd owner so not sure if it came that way or developed.

My 2018 Carrera coupe developed a minor tick in the driver's door at 30 miles, on the drive home from the dealership. Applying elbow pressure to the door panel just above the armrest silenced it. It has been intermittent since then. The car also developed a rattle in the dash within the first 1,000 miles, seemingly at the upper right side (near the airbag?). This one, too, is intermittent.

The dealer has been unable to replicate either noise so far—but the dash rattle started up again on my way home. Now gone again…

Mine could be the gas tank pads, not sure as it only drives me nuts intermittently.

Intermittent rattles are the worst—as they pit owner against service department in a goose chase. I can only imagine how many well-meaning service advisors have gotten gray hair while trying to solve nebulous squeaks and rattles.

My 2014 Targa has been a rattletrap...see my post history for a punchlist.

I've finally fixed most of them except for a creak/squeak from the glass lid assembly.
My car is higher miles than most - I bought in at 13K and it's now at 43K.

Maybe it's a factor of wear and the chassis is flexing?
It was a launch car, maybe it was just a buggy "version 1.0" off the line.

I wish I could quiet it down, I'm envious when other Targa owners swear theirs are silent.

If it sounds like a beer cooler squeak have them look at the foam pads on the gas tank.

I had an instrument panel rattle that made me crazy; after years of troubleshooting it was finally traced to the windstop assembly. It was replaced, the problem went away.
If yours is a cab or Targa, see if fiddling with the windstop changes the noise.

2017 991.2 C4 - built like a tank. Not a single rattle or unexpected noise going over what I would argue would be the worst roads/infrastructure in the country (Honolulu, Hawaii). Knock on wood lol

Exactly. If it really starts to affect my psyche I'll mention it at my next visit.

Then again I'm also fearful they will start rummaging through the dash and what not and possibly make it worse.

Maybe an x-pipe might be the best solution...:evilgrin:

Thread reminds me of this infamous story about ex Oklahoma linebacker Brian Bosworth when he worked at a GM plant. Hopefully no shenanigans like this at Porsche!

Speaking of loose bolts, Brian Bosworth, the University of Oklahoma's dyed-in-the-hair linebacker, has taken back his statement that he put stray bolts in General Motors cars more than a year ago, remarks that stirred protests from his former co-workers.

Bosworth was quoted in Sports Illustrated's fall football issue as saying that while on a summer job at GM's Oklahoma City plant, co-workers taught him how to insert the bolts in hard-to-reach places so they would rattle.

"If you own a Celebrity or a Century made in 1985 in Oklahoma City, that car is (bleeped) up if I had anything to do with it," Bosworth told the magazine.

He said each bolt carried a note that said: "Aha! You found me!"

Bosworth told the magazine: "I love the thought of people going absolutely crazy, saying, 'Where is that . . . rattle coming from?' "
