Default Porsche numbering

When the 991 came out was it called the 991.1 or do they not start calling it that until a .2 version comes around? Was it originally just called 991?
Dont really no the history of how they do the numbering.

Interesting question. Do "they" refer to any of them as point two? Because I was under the impression that was all "we" not "they".

As another example, when the 981 came out it was and still is just referred to as a 981. They never made a 981.2 so there is no 981.1. The 718 came out and was designated the 982 but everyone calls it a 718. Weird.

While I can't speak specifically for the 991, official technical literature typically does not numerically distinguish pre- and post- mid-cycle-refresh (aka facelift) cars. They do distinguish by model year, engine type, drive type, and/or VIN sequence, and others.

991-originating parts are all going to have the prefix 991. Not 991A, 991.1, 991-1, 991-A, etc.

Porsche may internally use an alphanumeric suffix for the individual ordering code of the car. For example, the invoice code for a 1994 928 GTS manual is a 928-940.
