Local dealer has a black/black base Cayman 718, no option manual car, sitting next to the same in an S. 59K and 69K stickers. Interesting builds. A bit off on the S, say 65K total - what a car for that price.

Pinger, I get you. I did the same thing in June. Traded my made-to-order 2015 Carrera GTS Coupe (2 years into ownership) for a low-miles 981 GT4. Couldn't be happier. Like yours, it was about an even swap, with the Carrera depreciating significantly and the GT4 going for MSRP +5k.

I've been tracking the new car much more than I did the Carrera. One interesting revelation about the 718S -- they are virtually as fast on Barber and Road Atlanta as the 981 GT4, and probably would be if fitted with Sport Cup 2s like my car. I have to really fight to stay ahead of them. The 718 has been a big advance in performance over 981.

I've not yet driven the 718, so I can't address the engine issue. I will say that I've had a couple of 4-cylinder cars (Honda and BMW) and was not thrilled with either.

However, I did go from a 991.1 to a 981 and never looked back.

I really want to hear how you like the Burmester in the Cayman. When I would search Autotrader for a boxster/cayman (981), perhaps only 2 or 3 with the Burmester audio.. certainly a rare option.

I will make a point of letting you know once I take delivery (March). I am an avid music buff, so looking forward taking a few road trips and cranking the volume!

Yeah, the GT4 was very tempting, unbelievable car - I wanted specific colours and features, so opted to go with a 718 GTS build.

The Burmester system most definitely has better clarity than the Bose system, particularly at the volume you sometimes need to compensate for the louder engine noise in the cockpit. I am not sure whether I would order it again given the cost, but it is a stellar system.

I know there are some who either can't tell the difference between the Bose and Burmester systems. I most certainly can.

Funny, I went the other way. Traded a 2016 Cayman S MT for a 2017 Carrera S. Wanted a more quiet car for long road trips. Tip: Burmester is waisted on the Cayman. I had it. Cockpit is way too noisy to enjoy the sound.

Great thread! OP echoes my considerations and thoughts as well. I’m a 982 driver looking to possibly upgrade to a 991.2 GTS in the relative near future. Ran into a guy who owns both and claims that while his 911 is most certainly more powerful, he enjoys driving his Cayman more. That said, this is coming from a guy who owns both. If he had to part with one, I wonder which he’d choose.

My follow up question to the group is this: you figure a well appointed 718 GTS is about 100k US, a 911 GTS about 145k US; do those of you who have or have driven or owned both feel the 911 is 45k better/makes you 45k happier?

One could argue it’s not about the cost, but I’m not so affluent that I can frivolously toss my cash around, so value matters to me.

From what I can tell, 911 gets you the heritage and prestige, more power, and a divine engine sound. 718 is a remarkable sports car (many journalists calling it one of the best sports cars ever made, minus the soundtrack) that makes up for the 2 fewer cylinders, less prestigious badging, and lackluster aural thrill with unparalleled steering and handling mechanics that allow you to dive bomb corners with a grace and delicacy that few vehicles can replicate. Honestly, I think I will have trouble passing up a 911 when the time comes but I’ve been hearing many of the same sentiments around the web and elsewhere, ie that I would buy the 911 and be happy, but might very possibly be happier in the 718 due its mid engine characteristics. What are your thoughts?

The 718GTS is a very, very good car. Would I trade my 991 Series II GTS for it - no, but that because of other factors such as rear axle steering and four seats. If money is a consideration go for the 718GTS you will not be disappointed

Worth a watch.

I went from a 718 Cayman GTS to a Carrera T. The 718 is a great handling car and I love how it looks. For me, I was Ok with the sound at first, but over time I found the noise inside the cabin fatiguing, especially in Sport Mode. I probably should have pulled a circuit breaker that controls the fake engine noise inside on the firewall behind the seats. I have absolutely no issues with the way the T sounds, for me It sounds great. The 7th gear is nice for Highway cruising, 75 mph is about 2000 rpms whereas the 718 at that speed in 6th gear is around 3000 rpms. I do prefer the 6 speed though.

With all that being said, I’ve been keeping an eye on the preowned 718 market. I wouldn’t mind having one again, but next time it may very well be a totally different type of 718. I am thinking about 718 Boxsters with PDK and Sport Chrono, to provide a different driving experience from the Carrera T.

Thanks for the info, hits home........ I am thinking the 991.2 S or T may hold value better with 718 GTS on having the flat 4? I had a 781S engine noise never bothered me as much as so little low end torque.
