getting bored with the car
#61
I may bore the folks who heard this before but I have owned a 1987, 1989, 1995 911 all purchased new with manual transmission. I then had several back surgeries when I owned the 1995 993 for 18 years and thought I better buy a PDK because my heel/clutch talent was diminishing. In 2013 I bought a new Base C2 991 with PDK. I drove it for 15 months but could not experience the same feelings I had when I drove the others. After asking my wife, I put it in Cars.com and sold it in 3 days for exactly what I was asking. That was 2015 so I ordered a C2 GTS with MT and other stuff that took 3 agonizing months to arrive. The bottom line is that I love my 2015 991 GTS. It responds to all of my wishes. I do not drive it in inclement weather but, when I drive it in fine weather, I never fail to get a compliment from a 10-16 yo boy who knows more about it than me or women who have various other intentions. I lecture to the former of the value of the massive post-high school education I have and the latter receive a very kind thank you (though I wish more). The GTS is enduring misshifts and multiple other transgressions but I can still take it around "The Tail of the Dragon" with aplomb. So, the truth is, get what you think will keep your fire alive. As they say, life is too short. I tell my wife that my GTS is my last. She kindly says, "I hope not".

OP - is it a .1 or a .2 car that is boring you?
Try tinkering with the sound as it will add to the overall driving experience, else sell it or drive it less to appreciate it more.

This. I know it's counter intuitive and these cars can certainly handle being driven every day but ... it makes it much more special and a sense of occasion when driven as a toy vs. a daily driver. I made that mistake once and quickly fell out of love with my 997 (PDK btw).
Never again. Also, probably wouldn't do PDK again either (depends on the model I guess).

A modern 911 with a PDK is a beautiful car, but unless you thrash it or force yourself to drive in manual mode...it's just lost too much of the fun IMO. Easy to get bored. My problem (love my 7MT) is what else would you get? So few things out there that are fun as others pointed out. The desire to produce a car that "does it all" means ultimately it doesn't do anything intoxicating.

That car looks sweet! Must be so much fun. Loved the exposed CF and how it adds to the quirkiness (hard to get in and out of.... isn't that part of the charm of what makes for an exotic sports car?).
My main gripe against it is that it uses a 4 cylinder. Albeit one of the best sounding 4's I've heard, but an exotic powerplant would've really set the car off.

Forcing yourself to drive in manual mode doesn't seem like too much of a hardship. After all, if you buy a manual transmission, you're doing that and then some. The real question is whether driving a PDK in manual is enough.

Not being able to utilize it for its intended purpose makes it not worth owning in my view.
There are cars like the 4C and others that offer much better low limit fun if driving on public roads. Few capture the essence of the 911 as an overall package though. The laws restrict its use to off road or the occasional empty road.
None of this means anything for those that own the car as a trophy.
