Default Would I like the slow(er) base car?

Ok I've grown up reading car mags, love to read about the big dogs, Vipers, CGT, GT3, F40/50, Bugatti etc.. you name it. I'm in love with exotics and fast speedy cars.

However reality is, insurance, law enforcement, (my) driving skills, etc.. conspire to dampen my need for speed.

I'm not saying boo to anyone who likes to drive fast within reason, but just feel the saying mo money mo problems, can be changed to mo power mo problems.

I had S2000 (slower than) and E90 M3 (similar to) base 911, I've driven 911 Turbo, GT3, McLaren SLR, F430 on drivers experience street drive.

Of course the faster cars are fun but also I'd likely a) drive them slow (similar to S2000/M3 speeds) or b) likely get a lot of speeding tickets.

So whilst looking at GTS / GT3 got to thinking might be that I can have fun with a base 911 (almost as much fun) while saving a lot of money.

Likely without going to the race track, I'd probably do better buying a base engine. Missing out on the prestige of a bigger power car.

What's the consensus, does the base car feel underpowered? Do I need bigger turbos or more displacement to feel true happiness?

Are you talking .1 or .2 base?

Only you can decide.

I have an 80 mile backroad loop with 8,000 feet of climbing and descending. S2000, 981 Cayman base, 996.2 GT3, 991.2 C2 MT, CBR600RR sportbike, and my Look 595 bicycle.

All are fun. Really fun.

If I had to choose just one, bicycle hands down.

likely while moving you don't miss the power as much and might miss the power more on acceleration from a stop(?). I like speed but don't want to go to jail. When driving a 911 Turbo was almost like the limits were so much higher than my S2000 it was like the car needed to be going 30 mph faster to feel the same fun as S2000.

While I bought the S truth be told I'd be happy with the base. I drove a few and thought they had more than ample power.

a base 911 of any year is more fun to push on the street.

The 991.1 is more rewarding to push on the street than the 991.2 - the 991.2 is faster from a dig.

I have a base and it's plenty. Only you can answer that question for yourself, though. More power would be nice, but I don't yearn for it.

Yes, an IMO accurate review by Ollie Marriage, head of car testing at Top Gear.

Actually I was worried that 991.2 C2 MT would have too much power for backroads. But I find the handling dynamics are so excellent that I have the confidence to use the power decisively and safely. More so than any other street car I have driven.

Also - a base 991 is lighter, more powerful and faster than 911S's of yesteryear.

How a car with far less torque is more rewarding on the street I have no clue. You get much more of a push down low from the 991.2 meaning you don't have to rev it out to have fun.

This statement make no sense. The 991.2 is faster from a dig and from a roll as well. Ask the 991.1 C4S I just blew away.

Someone might have trouble telling the difference between the 991.2 base and S anyway. They are that close.

If it bugs you, get sport cats and some bolt ons. If you really want to forget about it entirely, get a tune. The S will feel slow in comparison.

The engine is no longer the main deciding point. They are all the same. Even a GTS will lose to a tuned base car.

If power is the concern it's absolutely nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the link, too bad about the long gearing? Everyone says the MT is more fun though.
