Default Windshield replacement?

Unfortunately, thanks to an errant flying rock on an interstate, I'm going to have to replace my 991.1 windshield. Anybody have any experience of anything I need to know? I plan on having my local Porsche dlr handle the replacement with a factory [Porsche] windshield.

Subscribed. Best of luck. You should be fine. I went through something similar on another car and the dealer subbed the work to the same place that does all their collision damage. The body shop subbed to the windshield specialist who does all their work. It was easy, on my part, to just go to the dealer I have the relationship with, and insurance picked up the hefty tab, but that was ok with me. In the end the best folks did the repair. And it was seamless for me.

If you do a thread search you'll see some discussions about this in the last few months. Dealers don't do this themselves. Most everybody ends up contracting it out to SafeLite. They installed OEM glass in mine and did it perfectly. Just ask for one of their Master installers.

Had my windshield replaced after a pine cone fell on it 2 months into ownership. Brought it to my local Porsche dealer who subs it out. While washing my car, I found 2 to 3 chips in groove between paint and glass. Must have occurred during the glass removal process. They did not mention or try to fix. Needless to say.. I was pissed..

Safelite did mine too. Excellent job. Made sure all the wires were hooked up correctly. As StomRune said be sure to ask for their Master installer. He had just done a GT3 and McLaren before mine.

How bad is the crack?

Safelite did a free crack repair through my insurance a few months ago and it's almost undetectable.

Good luck on which ever direction you choose.

I had mine done last year. I called the service department at my dealer and they referred me to a local guy. He used Porsche glass and it was perfectly done.

Check with your insurance company for covering the new glass. I had mine replaced with no deductible...your coverage and state law might be different. If you have to pay for it, skip the dealer and use a windshield glass company.

Had a horrible experience with Safelite.
2 additional installation attempts to address the wind noise/air leak issue introduced by 1st replacement failed miserably --- OBD air bag warning triggered, wipers put back with wrong angle, side molding sticking out, missing caps, torn foam molding in the engine bay, etc. The worst of all, took me hours and hours of phone calls and 14 months(!!) to chase down the reimbursement check for the dealer visit for the air bag warning reset.

Safelite just did mine last weekend with OEM glass. $100 deductible. I'm very happy with their work. OEM glass was half the dealer cost - not sure if it's because my insurance company gets a discount.

Did mine about 2 weeks ago through Safelite. I went through insurance, which didn't save me much - don't know if I would bother with insurance again since they only cover "like quality" glass, which to them means cheap Chinese glass. I ended up paying about $1075 ($500 deductible + extra for OEM glass) through Safelite. No quality issues with Safelite so far (touch wood!), however I did ask for one of their master installers, and I brought my car into them instead of doing it in the driveway as it felt like a nicer work environment for them.

Some price points in case it helps you - dealer quoted $1383 for OEM glass and mention they would subcontract out the job. Safelite quoted $602 for Chinese class, $1220 for OEM glass. I believe the Safelite glass option that worked for me was "diversity antennae, green tint with grey band" which is the same as my original glass. I didn't think I had a grey band at first, but once I put white paper behind it I could see it.
