I'd consider going to dealer that has one of each and asking them if you could take each for a real test drive (let's say an hour or so). You'll get some ideas about what you like/dislike about each.

Then whichever one feels like it is asking you out for a more intimate second "date", that's the one.

This is great feedback on the 997.2 C2S vs a 991.1 base as I am facing somewhat the same decision...

I have a super nice, very low mileage 997.2 C2S nicely equipped with PDK, SC, 18 ways, etc... there is nothing I would change as the car is wonderful and PDK is an awesome piece of tech. BUT, I find myself longing for a manual when I have an opportunity to hit some back roads.

I've been casually looking for a 997.2 or 991.x manual. It is very difficult to find a reasonably priced, low mileage manual 997.2 that is as nice as mine. There seem to be more manual 991.x available. So it seems if I really want a manual, I'm faced with either finding a 991.1 base for about the same value as my 997 or adding a good chunk of money for a 991.1 C2S or 991.2 base.

Also, where in the world are you and dkmesa finding these CPO 991s for 60k?! All I can find are at least low-mid 70s.

After driving all 3 cars, I felt the 991 was best for me - all of the performance of the 997S, more comfort, and better tech.

I’ve already had my first track event and it was perfect. The car was much easier to drive than I expected and I had a blast. Next event is in a few weeks.

Thanks to all that posted. It really helped me make the right decision. I’ll be happy to answer any questions about my experience for others in the same position.

I am not sure what exactly your comfortable price range is but if you can buy

981 GTS.. I would go for GTS.. I am not a huge fan of none S cars... and although 997.2 is an Awesome porsche.. I can't handle outdated interior of it..

Thanks. When I said "I am facing somewhat the same decision", I should have clarified that I am only interested in a 911 variant.

I understand people may not desire the non-S cars, but I would be interested in better understanding why. Bragging rights or is there more? As far as performance, my nearly 9 year old 997.2 is already illegally fast beyond 3/10ths. It seem that a 991.1 base is roughly equal to 997.2 S and a 991.2 base is roughly equal to 991.1 S?

At some point I’ll be replacing my 991.1S with another DD so I can go from PDK back to manual.

It won’t be a 981 only because I already have a mid-engine weekend car. I’ll go either 997.2 or 991.1 in S or GTS, which one isn’t really as important to me as getting the right colors and options.

For me I’d get an S not a base because if you compare one of each on the market, the S is likely to have more nice options (including the extra stuff that comes in the S package) that they aren’t really getting anything for on resale. The prices aren’t that far apart, so really I see it as paying a bit more for a well-equipped car and getting a bigger engine for free. Who doesn’t want a bigger engine for free? But yeah of course the Base is plenty fast. Plus they made more S models so it’s going to be even harder to get a Base with exactly what you want.

I had a 997 C4S with a MT, and now have a 991.1 C4S as well, but with PDK. The 991 feels more mature and settled, while the 997 was more raw and nimble to toss around. Things I love about the newer version are the absolutely planted feeling. The 997 was stable with AWD as well, but the 991 is simply bolted to the asphalt. As crazy as it sounds in a pure sports car, I also appreciate the upgrade in tech. Touch screen, bluetooth, etc are welcome. I'll hang up my pit pass for that one, I know. Finally, I do appreciate the power upgrade... but not as much as I thought. I have other fast cars, so the overall experience in handling and feel are as important to me personally. Congrats to the OP on the purchase. You won't regret it!

I would add, you in texas, don't get an all-wheel drive, the manual transmission rear-wheel drive Porsche's is the absolute best combo, the 4's are for weather.

Having owned both, I disagree. The rear wheel drive will “feel” faster (since it is lighter) and it’s fun to rotate the rear end a little in corners but AWD will put the power down more securely. In a perfect world, have one of each . I have a 991.2 C4S &, if I could ever get one at a price I could live with, would love to get a 50th anniversary MT...

All good but conflicting advice. Flaw in all of this is $$$. Unless we know the price range, we can't discuss. A 997.1 can be had for 30k, S for 35k, 997.2 for 45k, cheapest CPO within 500 miles of me was 60k. Budget please
