Have a quick Q on PDK (SC) shifting. When on track (on a long straight) or after a launch control run in a drag race, is it best to leave the car to shift on its own in Sport+? Is the car programmed to give you the optimum shift at the perfect time? Or have people yielded better results from shifting manually?
PDK is hard to beat on upshifts so on a straight just let the PDK shift. You might want to downshift manually on some corners, although you leave it in Sport+. Also, the PDK is as smooth on shifts as possible so easier to keep balance. My brief on-track experience was that the PDK executes downshifts and upshifts very efficiently. How it works is a bit spooky actually, which is part of the fun and is engaging to me. As to better results or elapsed times, every comparison I have seen has lower times for the PDK.
I'm with AndrewP: on the track I've been leaving it in Sport+ "D" and just marveling at how ferociously quick and well timed the shifts seem to be.
Contrasting story: at a recent local track day I overheard a Boxter pilot talking about manually short-shifting his Tiptronic (at least I think that's what he called it) gearbox in one particular corner because the auto mode would shift in mid-corner otherwise and totally mess up the balance on the car. I've not experienced anything like that in the 991TT...it always seems to shift right at the moment the urge to shift crosses my mind...PFM
