Default To BMC Or not to

Buddy gave me a brand new BMC for our cars. Im not much for removing my bumper to service the filter that often, so is it a good move to drop that in or sell it.

Unless you plan on tuning it I would not bother. If you plan on tuning you are probably replacing plugs every 15k miles, that is the same cycle to clean and re-oil the BMC. With bolt-ons and air filter without a tune you are getting a little more engine responsiveness but very little addition power as the top level table in the DME is TPS position mapped to a target torque … so in reality very little power increase without a tune that works some of the table targets as well as other sub tables

BTW you can remove the bumper without removing the spoiler by placing spoiler in the service position and then lifting the base up to the elevated wing and painters taping the base to wing .. creating the gap to remove lights and the 4 top bumper bolts. Takes me all of 10 minutes to remove the bumper.

I put it in, then bought a second one, so I'd never pay Porsche tax on a paper filter again - simply pull out the dirty one, put the freshly cleaned on in, and away you go... changed annually with the oil.

Oh I did not know this, that does sound WAY better. I've been paranoid about removing it because of the wing, good tip!

Hard to say for sure if BMC really makes a difference over a new OEM filter - I did it because everyone else seemed to be replacing their OEM with BMC and the cost difference was not material. I doubled down on the unknowns by going to Eventuri.

I would say any cotton (or equivalent) will be superior to paper any day of the week.

I have a buddy who had a modded 996 TT and he said, years ago mind you, that he had his car dynoed with the BMC and with the factory filter and dyno results showed no real increase.
Just some additional food for thought.
Personally, I'm typically skeptical of aftermarket air filter claims.

I've never seen anyone make any more power with a BMC filter in a turbo engine. I have bought two over the years, and they don't really sound any different to my ear, either. That said, I don't remember them being much more expensive than Porsche's OEM.

The Porsche OEM filter is designed to provide more than adequate air to the engine than required, even when a little dirty. If there was any free HP available with just an air filter then Porsche would have done it.
