The VGT turbos have a good bit to do with this. Electronically controls the vanes in the turbos to change power / sound output.
BTW..."SPORT" mode had the pops / Crackles...."Sport PLUS" and "REG" modes do not.
If you do an exhaust, this will become more obvious.

I didn't notice much difference in the exhaust note on the OEM exhaust system when switching between NORMAL and SPORT modes (holding rpm constant in each). However, as soon as I installed the Speedtech X-Pipe with no mufflers, but retaining the OEM cats, the differences were enormous. In addition to the deeper tone in all modes, SPORT mode brings all the great gurgles and crackles, especially with driving in manual mode.
I drive in PDK manual mode 95% of the time, and as soon as the oil temp hits 194ºF, I'm in SPORT mode all the time, just to enjoy the exhaust symphony.

The best solution for this is the create the "Individual" mode on the dial. I choose the Sport Plus power setting, Aero NOT deployed, and PDCC OFF, so when I'm in individual mode and shifting manually, I don't have to deal with the Pops / Cracks.
With my exhaust, the pop/cracks are LOUD!! When I want to access my inner 12 year old, the Sport mode / pops/cracks are fun! lol. For about 3-4 mins.

Not sure what that means but I bought it used/cpo so perhaps it was programmed differently at some point.

I think the .1's were like that vs. the .2's.
I could be wrong but someone that has one can correct if I am.

I just don't see any reason to use Sport + on the street, and I keep the revs where I want them by driving in manual PDK mode. Thus, I haven't really evaluated it fully in Sport + mode.
It's not obnoxious at all because the OEM cats keep the fireworks toned down. It's just right for me.

I thought so.
Without Cats, the pops/cracks are LOUD!! Like said, when I have that moment I want to act like an obnoxious kid, it's fun. Rest of time, I'm in Reg. or Sport Plus.
Individual mode was a Nice add for the .2's.

Sport Plus being for the track / racing, there's Zero reason to tune it IN and waste extra fuel IMHO.
Some tracks have sound limits and with meters to read it. I got black flagged at Atlanta Motorsports Park for my exhaust being so loud in the corner with the meter (Not popping / cracking, just driving in sport plus).
Was asked to upshift / short shift in that corner.
So, I'd say it a fuel economy / power tuning thing.
Sport is for street driving so I get they figure people want to show off a bit... lol
