Default Is an Extended Warranty Recommended for 10 year old 991 Turbo S?

I have a 2014 Turbo S with just over 55,000 miles. The previous owner purchased the car CPO about 3 years ago, so the CPO expired about 11 months ago. The car is in great shape, and I'm about to do my 60,000-mile service. However, I realize that when something goes wrong with these cars, it can be very expensive. It looks like a Fidelity warranty for 36 or 48 months will cost me between $5,600 and $7,000 with a $500 deductible. That's a chunk of change, but I recognize this is a 10-year-old car. For those who have similar or higher miles on their 991s and based on the issues (or no issues) with your vehicles, would you recommend spending this much on a warranty?

Remember, buying a warranty is a bet against house odds.

Moving this to the turbo forum to get their insight!

It's really luck of the draw as to whether it's worth it or not. However, I can share my related experience, although not exactly the same. I mention it only as an illustration of how expensive some repairs can be.

After purchasing my '14 TTS CPO last year, I noticed a slight front-end vibration, at light-to-moderate throttle as power began to transfer from rear to front wheels. It was only in a brief window, then smoothed out. After ruling out tire balance, alignment, or any suspension issues, the local Porsche dealer decided it was clutch-wear on the front-drive module, and they replaced the entire thing with a new one after receiving approval from Porsche. It would have been an $11K repair, but it cost me nothing.

However, it's unclear whether an extended warranty would have covered it because the car was perfectly drivable and the vibration was light enough to likely not be noticed by a lot of drivers. My Porsche service advisor believed that even a reputable extended warranty company would have not covered it until there more serious failure symptoms. Mine was not that.

There’s no right or wrong answer when it comes to extended warranties. They are essentially insurance products, and insurance is all about the management of risk. If you don’t buy an extended warranty, then your risk is that you’ll have to pay for an expensive repair. You may or may not need a repair. If you pay $7,000 for a warranty and it is never used, then you’ve lost $7,000. That’s a very real risk, especially for a car that is known to be reliable. Using the example above by @Foosh , if you paid $7,000 for a warranty with a $500 deductible, you’re really only saving $3,500, not $11,000.

Personally, I don’t think extended warranties make financial sense for most people. I’ve bought several in the distant past and never used them. Independent studies have been done by organizations like Consumer Reports and Car & Driver and they have concluded that the overwhelming majority of people who purchase an extended warranty lose money in the long run. I think that extended warranties can make sense if you’re in a financial position where a major repair would bankrupt you or you’d be unable to afford it. Otherwise, it’s a gamble that you probably shouldn’t take.

These are my opinions and I know that there are plenty of examples of extended warranties proving to be beneficial for people. Again, it all comes down to your tolerance for risk and your ability/willingness to pay for repairs if necessary.

Not for me. I’ll bank the $6k per year. If something blows in 5 years, I have $30k plus earned interest to cover it. If nothing blows……….yea !

Warranty coverage is a one time payment, the premium is not owed every 12 months to maintain warranty coverage.

I appreciate the feedback! For clarification, the warranty cost I noted in my original post is for the entire 36 or 48 months, not annual. I guess I'm more thoughtful about the warranty on this car since repairs can be so much more costly compared to other vehicles such as my daughter's Hyundai or my wife's Ram. Dennis, as you said, the warranty would have only put a dent in an $11,000 repair once you take into account the warranty cost and the deductible.

Coverage lengths span from 2 years to 11 years depending on mileage at the start of coverage, customers typically opt for 48-60 months of coverage.

60 Months looks to cost about $6,800 based on my current mileage.

Even though I have savings, I choose to purchase the warranty...........just in case.
Label me as a naysayer, but I'd rather spend a bit - (4,800) on insurance than tens of thousands on a catastrophic failure.

Exactly, you're not only purchasing the warranty coverage, but peace of mind as well.

I have a 10 year old TTS. I originally got a warranty through Fidelity for 3 years back 8 years ago. I never used it.
I have since gone to self insuring. Obviously with any 10 year old car there can be issues but these cars are rock solid. Instead of dropping big $’s up front stow away a few hundred $’s per month. Over time if you don’t use it, it becomes your mod fund. If your car has good service history and good bones that it what “I” would do. Just my opinion. Good luck with the car.
