No, I went to my BMW guys. After looking at the comments, seems like it is easy to do, so I'm not going to give them too much grief.

Randy, your odds were against me... I started it, ran it for twenty minutes, warning is still there...

Back to the shop tomorrow....

Thank you everyone for the input, it is appreciated.

Had this happen to me before an autocross day actually. First time i did any "tracking" with the car, i knew it was two clicks under the "max fill" spot i decided not to be lazy and top her off. Car was warm (@215 oil temp), put half a quart in...waited five minutes..put another half quart in...went up one click...put another third in. and took off. On the highway the light came on. ended up draining at least a quart out the track and it was still at the "max fill" mark.

reached under and cracked the drain plug loose enough until it started draining but not enough to remove the plug. was a little slow (20 minutes) but it seemed like the best way to do it accurately and carefully instead of trying to remove the plug quick and get burned by oil haha.

Seems like the sensor really needs some time to acclimate even when the oil is hot. in the future i'll keep it safely below the fill mark

Off to the shop; they want to drain a little while it's cold, pick it up tomorrow AM, all should be good.

Again, thanks Guys, appreciated.

Everything corrected and green; never met a more finicky oil measurement system...

Thanks for the input guys!

Did they say how much they removed? I use BMW service dept too. They're a half mile down the road from my P dealer, but way easier to work with (as long as I bring my 3/4" torque bar when needed)

They took out half a liter; I offered to bring them my 600ft/lb torque wrench when they installed the springs, but they were so equipped.

When I went to retorque after sixty miles it was spot on.

Like I said, it was over by about 200-400ml. Sorry I was off by 100ml.

That's ok - I would love to figure out how to siphon oil out, if you have any ideas...

When I get my oil change I only have him add 7 1/2 quarts. Then I slowly top it off over the next few days. Is there any reason why I should be trying to get it to the tippy top. I usually run it a fraction or two below the top level.
