Understated cars can be amazing. Why do they need to stand out so everyone else knows what it is? I can't stand the attention of driving ferraris etc on public roads. It is awful.
This car-
Amazing engine
Amazing manual trans
Guessing amazing handling (haven't driven one)
Could possibly be the last manual 500 hp natural 6 to come?
Sign me up - with all the haters they should be trading under Msrp.

To the owners of these lucky cars, Congratulations. Hopefully Porsche produces more for the "masses."

The best things about the R are hopefully the handling (inc narrower rubber), the manual box, the reduced sound deadening, the engine, the weight etc.
Having said all that, the main aesthetic selling point for me is the lack of wings and the narrower body. I really don't want to drive round in an RS on the road with all of the pseudo race car stuff going on, and the car doing everything for me (paddles don't count as driver inputs, IMO).
That's (obviously) just my opinion though. Doesn't make it worth $500k or more, but at MRSP there's nothing modern out there which appeals more. FWIW I think the premiums quoted are totally exaggerated, and more annoying than anything else as it just means more attention when you're out in the car.
