haha I did that a few times but stopped after having to run across the Detroit airport to catch a connecting flight to Watkins Glen. That helmet bag all of a sudden weighed a ton

I always carry it on.

One good 'crack' from a thrown piece of baggage and it's a goner. Get to the track and unpack a cracked helmet, then what ? Look for a kiosk and hope they have someone selling one in your size.

(as a side note, while at Sebring this year, I strolled infield and bought a new 2016 Bell full face which was on sale for PCA members. 5 months later it still has not arrived ....... chronic backorder/supplier issues.)

Even before baggage fees the family would do this both ways with ski equipment (contraband) or dirty clothes or souvenirs near the end of a trip.

I carried mine on and, as pointed out, a lot fits in it so you can pack efficiently.

Carrying on to road america last week was a real annoyance

Tiny plane and didn't fit in over head

I insisted that they keep it in the little closet the flight attendants use

They loved me on those flights

ALWAYS CARRY ON. At most tracks there are track side race concession shops that could sell you a new race suit, underwear, gloves, shoes etc, but helmets are personal with drink bottle and air cooler attachments, and finding the right helmet at a track if your luggage (or FeDex) does not show up, is not going to be a fun process. And I speak from experience. Several years ago, myy race bag did not make the flight, and had to go out on test day at Road America at June Sprints with new safety gear bought from the track side shop, but fortunately had my helmet with me.
