Some insightful conjecture on the 991.2 GT3

Keep in mind, this is a Carrera S 991.2, not a GT3 991.2

Some more info, not necesssarily new, but reassuring for those of us who are GT3 addicts.
From CAR Magazine:

From CAR Magazine:
This doesn’t mean total extinction for 911s without forced induction – the next-gen GT3 will stay naturally aspirated, initially using an evolution of its current 4.0-litre engine before being replaced by a lighter, more powerfulMkII engine – which, crucially, is expected to remain without forced induction.

And perhaps even the 992 GT3.
From Automobile Magazine
While the free breathing, naturally aspirated 4.0-liter motor fitted to the current Porsche 911 GT3 RS has some potential for evolution, it will eventually be superseded by an even brawnier, lightweight Mk II engine, but without forced induction. The lightweight, no-frills Porsche 911R scheduled to appear in limited quantity next year will have a naturally aspirated 450-hp engine, which is further proof that the classic Porsche flat-six has a future in Stuttgart.

Looks like my prediction was right:

"... and I won't be surprised if they call it just "911 GT" or "911 R". "

The front bumper isn't so bad though.

Rear is horrid. I bet 991.1 Carrera S with manuals will hold value quite well after seeing this.

So that article didn't give great insight as to the next GT3 engine. So the GT3 RS will get a revised engine. Will the GT3 get the current RS engine, a new engine, same engine with minor tuning?
Thoughts?

Not a fan of that engine choice, presumably an X51 9A1 that's been breathed on a little. I'll consider it a serious negative if it doesn't get a version of the GT3's true dry-sump mill.

Three Wheelin'
It didn't occur to me that the engine would be non-GT3 derived, but what you suggest makes sense if the R designation is analogous to the 987 Cayman R. Such an offering would be much less interesting even with the expected weight trimmings.

Tail lights look awesome. Front bumper looks great as well.

Saw 991.2 In The Flesh Today!
Well, I was traveling eastbound on Sunset blvd today in Beverly Hills and out of the corner of my eye, coming toward me was a 991. No big deal, in BH, they're a dime a dozen. But it was a cool color which got me to look a little more closely as it got closer. I immediately recognized the color as Slate Grey just like Pete's avatar of his GT3 Cup motor'd longhood. Then I realized, HOLY CRAP it's a 991.2!!! the camo was completley off of the front end, they were nolonger trying to disguise the front fender mounted running lights to look like 991.1's. I didn't get a good look at the rear lights but it did have the hideous vertical slat grill on the decklid just like the one in the walkaround vid that ipse dixit posted. I really hope that isn't production. vertical slats just look so weird and definitely are not homogenous to the design. I really hope those are all preproduction, otherwise the aftermarket is gonna have a field day if someone makes horizontal slats to replace the vertical ones. Sadly, I couldn't get my phone out in time to snap any pix. But if you're in Los Angeles, be on the lookout, there's 991.2's lurking around town doing some road testing!
A while back I was lucky enough to see an entire convoy of 991's including a Targa which hadn't been released yet. It was pretty cool, my pics went around the internet and was put on a few car sites. Unfortunately this time around I couldn't get the camera out in time. oh well lol

Cool to have seen that! I wonder if they're making slate grey a non-PTS colour, or if that was a new colour similar to it. The Glasurit site lists a new "Vulkangrau" colour (but I didn't think it was in the 911 category)...
