Thanks to Bigkraig who posted this:
http://www.durametric.com/
It looks very nice and for my GT3 what I would need.
BUT...
It would only work with Porsche. I have 4 other vehicles all non-Porsche.
Is there anything else out there that would be as versatile on the Porsche but also work on my other vehicles?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
Jeff

The variety of scan tools and code readers available on the market is pretty big. Anything from 50 $ code readers to a 10K Snap On Verus can do the job of displaying and the better ones, analyzing OBD2 related DTCs for vehicles 1996 and newer.
For Porsche, the Durametric is probably your best option, unless you want to spend a lot of money on the factory PIWIS.
But the 50 $ code reader will do the job reading generic OBD2 specific codes for all the range of vehicles you own. Just don't expect it to help you identifying what they mean and how to go on about solving the problem.
Bang for your buck,I'd get the Chinese made Autel Maxidas scan tool for around 1K or so...it can do a lot of things on a variety of vehicles, you just need to know how to use it-don't expect any explanation or support from the manufacturer.

Be wary of buying a PIWIS 2. OE pass through interfaces are difficult to source and most of the ones anyone will try to sell you are cheap, unreliable, Chinese clones.

I have recently tried and failed with connection from the user version of the durametric tool which works well with my 996 and 997 RS engines, it will not open engine or PDK modules on 991 gt3. Durametric staff at work for fix but none available at present.
Anyone with any different luck?
