Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the last 911 that required that the engine be dropped to change plugs was the 993. I believe the coil packs and plugs on both the 996 and 997 can be accessed by removing the rear wheels and side mufflers. I'll bet the 991 is similar.
To respond to Dan's original question, DIY items like oil changes are pretty simple which helps defray some of the costs involved in routine maintenance.

I have a 996 with a blown motor as well. 2000 C4 70k miles - I have been to the world pack class for rebuilding the engine but mine is too far gone
I need to buy a wrecked car and substitute engines - which years will plug and play and can I upgrade to 2002-03 with a 3.6 with out a new wiring harness etc - are any 3.6 liters plug and play?
Help in SC

Oil every 12k on a GT3 is laughable. Non track guys will do it yearly and tracks guys will do it more often. Too bad the filter is like $50!
the PDK oil change at 48k is interesting as i didnt see that in the Base car.

Turbos are different as more stuff needs to come off.
Having looked at the 991 carreras engines, the plugs seemed accessible
DIY plug change on a 997 gt3 isnt too bad.

991 TT and TTS do require the engine to be dropped.

I'd do the work myself but, it's just easier to be warranty compliant letting the dealership handle. It was ridiculous how just a small amount of oil would set off the sensors, it's got to be brought up to temp, cooled down if you need to remove oil and, PIWIS / OBD was being used for a simple oil change at the dealership.
I just got back from Costco, they don't sell MPSC2s, they can't order them, they can't handle centerlock removal, even if I brought the equipment, torque wrench/multiplier, grease. Well, looks like it's my old hook up specialty shop, Tirerack / DIY or the dealership for that part of maintenance.
Dan (will likely just let dealership handle everything unless something hinky arises)

I agree. The PDK and PDK-s are sharing a lot of components.

I will use an Indy porsche or dealership for maintenance. Dan - I wouldn't let Costco within 10 ft of my gt3! I have found the best route is to have tire rack ship to a high end tire shop- cheaper and better than the dealership in my experience. Shoreline motoring is who I use in so cal- they are the best I've encountered and have reasonable/set pricing.

I was rather surprised to hear that the plugs need to be changed at 12K miles. Was that true of the 997 GT3 as well? Or does it have to do with the demands of a 9K engine?
Hope the spark plug change is a reasonable DIY. Great bonding experience with your car!

no, its a longer interval. "Replace spark plugs every 24,000 miles (40,000 km) or every 4 years"
