FWIW from a newbie who had driven them both and toiled over the decision for 6 months a quick review and opinion:
-No comparison on the fit in finish, the 991 is better everywhere
-Overall the car looks more aggressive (font end) and less dated
-Better front end bite on the 991. Some miss the "light front end" 997's
-It is faster and feels freaking explosive above 5K. Yes, explosive.
-Any perceived torque loss to the Mezger is crushed by the top end hit
-I love the dual nature of a PDK car. Not all do. But I think it adds value
-The auto is easy in traffic, to dinner, parking. PDK turns animal quickly
-I had manuals for 20 years. I wanted to try PDK and paddles
-Just as involving, but in a different way for me.
-I couldn't justify 135K, no warranty for a 4 or 5 year old car
-Drive one if you haven't
My 2 cents. I bought a 991

In comparing my 991 gt3 to old 997.2 gt3 , the new car is better in every way possible. Just no match. It feels like it moved few generations forward. The handling is sublime , it's faster better looking ... Just overall feels like a supercar.

I am fortunate to have both a 997.1 gt3 bought with 11K miles now with 24K after 3 yrs of ownership and a 991 Gt3. Have tracked the new one 3X this month and am faster and more consistent. I smile when driving either one. 2700 miles now on the new one. For me the heel toe is/was both stressful and rewarding. This was new for me never having done this before.
With the new one I just lightly brake, turn in, tires grip like crazy, start rolling on the throttle before the apex and go, go,go.
Did hire the same personal coach who helped me in previous 2 911s including the 07 gt3. Well worth it.

- Have had a 997.2 GT3 and tracked the car 5-6 times per year.
- Great handling and quick.
- Loved the sound of the exhaust.
- Thing to remember is clutch is very heavy and if you plan to commute a lot, can become tiring.
- Now have 991GT3 and one track event under my belt (Mid Ohio). While I was within 8/10ths of my best time in 997.2, it was crazy fast (read, shifts) and easy to navigate. Plan on getting a new personal best next time out.
- On the street the car is easier to drive and smoother due to longer wheelbase
- I like having the latest technology features. Simple $hit like auto headlights, beep to confirm doors locked, improved PCM
- Was never a fan of rear bumperettes on 997 and love the rear of the 991; Euro version even better than U.S.
- There is a small part of me that misses shifting. Not on the track but cruising around town (no traffic).

To me, this is very straightforward.
If you value the manual transmission driving experience.....the 997 GT3 is your choice.
If you are OK with the PDK-S transmission, then the 991 GT3 is clearly the better and faster car (less understeer, less oversteer, overall better chassis). The electric power steering should not be a deal breaker for most drivers, and the PTV plus/rear wheel steer are not really noticeable to drivers when pushing on the track.
In fact, I would go on to say that if you value the manual transmission driving experience, the new Cayman GT4 may be even better than the 997 GT3 given its mid-engine layout and superior 991 chassis bits.

my 997 gt3 was a precision driving experience ...I loved every minute of it.
The 991 gt3 is like you are in a missile ...you don't drive it you aim it!
