When I have no passenger, the overhead Air Bag Off warning light is lit all the time. Is that the normal way this functions?

Yeah, that's normal. In my Cayenne it's so bright as to be annoying so I put a piece of black electrical tape over the light. Maybe it's because I haven't driven the GT3 a lot a night, but I've not been bothered by it as much in that car. The same trick would work, though, if it bothers you.

I always have a question on this.
If I have a child that weights 60 lbs. The airbag will be off when you put her there as it is below the "on" threshold. Let's say God forbids one gets into a fender bender and the crash puts extra force or weight on the child onto the seat sensors that the weight now is more than the threshold. Will the airbag deploy?

It might. I think Porsche has an optional dealer installed switch to disable the airbag for just that reason; at least they used to.

Hmmm. This is a concern. My daughter would like to pick up the car with me this Friday.

For some reason I interpreted your question to involve a child car seat and it obviously doesn't. Sorry. I'm pretty sure the off switch was designed to work in conjunction with a child car seat.

Thinking more about it, it seems unlikely that a child alone in the seat would cause an issue. Their weight would be moving forward into the seatbelt in a collision not down into the seat and after all, that's what the seat weight sensor is for. One would hope that the kind of situation you're concerned about had been taken into account when the sensor was designed.

I'm no expert on this; maybe someone else could chime in.
