Well, I would start by saying that you MUST do this class! But I can't
because this was the last one.... ever. Say it ain't so! It just became
a question of economics and safety. So much so that the instructors
chose not to ride with us in the cup cars as they had done in past sessions.
Over two days, six participants rotated through six cars for the whole
day of track sessions. (2 GT3s, 2 Turbos and 2 GT3 Cup cars)
About half way through the first day GT3 #1 went down on over
heating issues. Unfortunately, niether GT3s had had the mesh update.
They scraped rubber off the radiators, but the problem continued.
So back to the dealer it goes for extensive drill down. Goldcrest Racing
tried their best, but could not diagnose it.
The track at Barber is like Shangri-La! The weather was absolutely
beautiful. Temperature both days 58-75. The staff at Barber PSDS
is exceptional and the instructors are second to none.
We had Hurley, Cass, Brian, Peter, Sean and Owen. We had data
review sessions on the Cup cars twice on the second day.
The GT3s were just amazing to drive on the track. So were the Turbos.
I found a new appreciation for the Turbo! Going from the GT3 to the
Turbo was not as fun as the other way around. The Turbo required
more input, had a bit more oversteer and could get a tad squirrly on the Pirelli P-Zeros.
The GT3 felt like it was on rails. I had "nannies" ON in both cars.
In the first video I'm playing chase with I think John "Xbrit". You can
see there is no closing him on the straights. In fact, it was hard to close on him anywhere!
Nice driving John!
As I look back on the video it's so easy to see where I left time on the table.
Like going to power late, going to power too hard, not staying with power long enough,
braking too early, etc. But when you are in the car driving
it, it's harder to see it.
Now, going to the Cup Car everything is magnified. By a factor of "Wow"!
Grip, power, response, brakes, throttle, gears, etc. And.... No NANNIES.
I think driving it solo made me more cautious, which is a good thing. And...
I didn't want to **** off Hurley!
I couldn't really see many engineering similarities between the GT3s and the Cup cars,
except the body and some of the suspension geometry.
Like was pointed out so masterfully in a previous thread. Not many shared
parts. Track temp was about 75-85 degrees in the morning and 90+
in the afternoon. Driving the cup car was a thrill beyond thrills. Very easy to drive at 8/10ths.
Getting out of and into pit lane was the hardest part.
At 8/10ths you could match the GT3 hot lap times. At least my hot lap
times. It's over 8/10ths to 9/10ths and beyond that the demon lives.
I knocked on his door a couple of times (turn 4 & turn 14) and decided it
was best to leave him alone!
In the second video I am following Hurley in the AM in the Cup car on cold slicks and cold track. Oh joy!
Right after he pulls off to give me the green light....
my GoPro memory stick hits FULL. DOH!
My best lap over the 2 days in the cup car was 1:42:03. I was able to
pick a stuffed bear from the middle shelf. The car driven by Andrew, Cass or Hurley will do 1:27s.
The lap times in the GT3 for me were about 1:45
to 1:48 and with the benefit of Nannies and driving it to the best of my
abilities.
I have a video in the Cup car doing my best hot lap on a memeory stick
and it's PC based, so I'm trying to figure out how to extricate it and upload it
to share on this thread.
All in all I wish I could do it again. Even at the hefty price. It was so worth it.
Jeff Purner said they are working on something to replace it with.
I don't know much more as it is still in planning stages. Maybe something
with GT4s when it comes out or maybe a race car version of that. Who
knows. All I know is I didn't crash Daddy's car and I had the most fun
in a long time and crossed another thing off my bucket list.
Enjoy the videos and please feel to critique.![thumbsup](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/bigok.gif)

Rob,
My boss often says " Better Lucky Than Smart "I think you got a little of both going on , real great
accomplishment you get the bragging rights on this one for sure . Didn't reread your thread ,but the second vid posted I take it, the Blue car is the Cup car such addiction that would be , so linear and mechanical awesome experience

Rubbaman, thanks for posting. Barber is just down the road from me. With all the blind, technical stuff it takes a lot of laps there to really start knocking off the time. 1, 7(maybe called 8-anyway the first righthander at the top of the museum complex), and 12 are very fast corners once you get used to them.

Even more so than the GT3, sounds like the Cup really needs to rev. Eye opening how different the sound on the Cup was as you left the pit compared to once on track. I'm glad you got to experience that, and thanks for sharing it with us! Wish I could have done it one day too.

New car, new track and all but it looks like a 991GT3 is a mid 1:30 car!
Best I ever did was a 1.38 in 3.8RS and the track surface got a little faster after it was redone..
The video is somewhere on TCN

I think the track is 2 seconds faster now than when the GT3DE Cup came through
