Unhappy Fuel efficiency

Hope to get an answer to a simple question. Why is the 991 GT3 so much less fuel efficient than say the 991 turbo s when it is slower in acceleration and top speed? The estimated fuel consumption for city driving is one-third worse than the turbo s....

The fuel efficiency tests are not done at full throttle 0-60 or top speed. In some conditions turbocharged engines are more efficient. They take the energy in the exhaust stream in the form of pressure to drive the turbine that increases the pressure of the intake. In a naturally aspirated engine that exhaust energy is wasted. And that is why we are seeing and will continue to see more and more turbo engines to meet mandated fuel economy standards. That said neither of these cars is particularly fuel efficient.

The Turbo S is rated at 17-24 and the GT3 at 15-20 so the GT3's city rating is about 12% worse. It's highway rating about 17% worse. In either case, nowhere near 1/3.

The GT3 has much shorter gearing than the Turbo S so at any given speed it's turning higher RPM. I suspect this is the biggest reason for the higher fuel consumption.

Surely you can't be serious. I'm ecstatic when it's down around 5 MPG, cuz that means the car is being flogged on track at full throttle!

I like to ignite as much gas as possible. This is not the Prius forum.

I prefer to measure the "smile per mile" with the GT3

The Porsche website says turbo s is rated 12.2l/100km while gt3 is 18.9l/100km, roughly one third more, for city driving...a stark difference. Don't get me wrong, anyone who can afford a gt3 will not care to much, that I agree, but the mark of engineering genius is to provide a vehicle with amazing performance at less fuel cost. The gt3 still is much better than rivals such as the 12c, etc., in terms of fuel consumption but surely Porsche is interested in improving and should continue to strive for that IMHO

The good news is that the poor fuel economy makes the car much more exclusive - they can only sell them in extremely low volume and make up for the gas guzzling by improving economy in other models - such as the 911 C2S with coast and auto stop start.

I've found that my GT3 is more fuel efficient when being driven hard on the street (11.8 litres/100km or 20mpg), than my RS4 is as a daily driver (15 litres/100km or 15.7mpg) but I didn't buy either car because I thought they were going to be efficient; I bought them because I thought they'd be great cars. That said, I am pleasantly surprised by the efficiency I'm getting from the GT3.

I laugh and sarcastically thank the people driving Priuses and other boringly fuel-efficient vehicles, because it means there's more fuel left for me

The car is not slower I have a TurboCAb and I have a raced GT3 in first gear and also in second gear and GT3 smoke my turbo every single time. I have the 991 turbo . It got spanked over and over again six times. Maybe the turbos will win off the line but from first and second it's a dog

The fuel efficiency sucks in the GT3. And I do not care but also happy I got the extended fuel tank.(less trips to station). She is quite thirsty but if you are concerned how much it is costing you to drive her than a Tesla an good option

^^I am not surprised in your findings. I do not care how much they say the Turbos do not have any lag any more but it is still there and the couple tenths it takes to wind up is lost ground. But eventually it will catch her.
