I wonder what that means? Is he technically out of a coma but still in a vegetative state, or has he actually begun to show signs of consciousness and recovery? I hope for the best. #keepfightingmichael......

I guess the simple way if one is technically out of a coma or show signs of consciousness is shining a light at the pupils and see if it dilates. I think schumi past that test. Here's hoping for more than just that. Mike

I had the same thought. Long road for him and his family, heart breaking.

If the pupils don't dilate, good chance one is brain dead. This is not usually a reversible finding. Out of a coma means opens eyes on his own or makes some kind of semi-puposeful movement but as Mike said, there is a huge range of what that means.

It's not dilation of the pupils, but rather constriction that should occur with light.
