This happened two days ago. I hope that does not change the time table for next weeks announcement on the GT3.

Hope not. OTOH, it's another possible data point for confirming possible causes, if in fact it's related to the GT3 fires.

Anyone wonder why they never have issues with the gazillions of Panamera and Cayennes on the road?

you want it to be a total loss - worse thing is to limit the fire so that it is repairable( as if the small extinguisher will even do anything except draw you so close that you get burned too) , since future value is also toast and the stench will never leave the car

Geeesh!

Again, I'm wondering if I should have been happy about getting the smoking package for free.

How many 991s have shipped. Is this car statistically significant. Cars burn all the time and it doesn't make the news. Some cars are burned intentionally for insurance, or to get out of payments. Some catch fire by accident, without product fault. Ship enough cars and some are going to catch fire.

Not defending the GT3 situation, but there are a whole lot more 991s out there. Statistically, some will burn.

Sorry but this statistical stuff is a bit BS. Why on earth would a car burn in 2014 unless something external causes the fire. I just have not seen many cars spontaneously burn in my life.. Actually now that i think about it the only car I have ever heard of having a similar fate in my circle of friends/family/colleagues was a friend Panamera. I will dig out the pictures.

That said I have driven my former 991 S hard on France roads in the middle of the summer and never had an issue with the engine. Probably the single item which didn't give us cause of concern during the 12mths 8k miles ownership.
