Well so far no one has said that. It is my understanding that no AVT is requested since this is a US car. The plates will expire so one would have to register it in some European country which would trigger the AVT tax.

If you (temporarily) import a car into Germany you have to escrow the VAT (& import duty) I believe. If VAT also has to be placed in escrow for an export car, then this (was) transparent to the purchaser, I certainly did not have to do this when I did ED in 2007 (i.e: if its necessary, Porsche takes care of this).

I didn't need to put up the VAT when I did my ED last summer. I just put down a modest deposit. Maybe this was a because I was in Canada but I can't see why that would make a difference.
FWIW, ED is definitely worth the headaches you are going through. It was a serious bucket list trip for me.
Enjoy!

Edit: Current info from the Porsche web site....
Payment must be made to your authorized Porsche dealer. Full payment includes the purchase price of the vehicle that was negotiated with your dealer.
Note: German tax laws require a Value Added Tax (VAT) to be paid on all purchases. Porsche Cars North America requires that your dealer collect the full VAT of 19% at time of payment, in the event that your vehicle is not exported under current Customs guidelines and standards. The VAT payment is fully refundable when your vehicle has cleared customs in North America.
