Default Poll: Upset about PDK? AND Can you double clutch a downshift while braking (heeltoe)?

Just wondering. Be honest, it's not public

Learned how to double clutch downshifts and rev match on my '73 Lotus Europa Twin Cam 40 years ago. I'm not upset about PDK......

No master at heel n toe, but I manage to match revs until the brake pads are metal to metal.
PDK is boring on the street and at the track.

Absolutely! I'm not the target buyer, but it does make me sad to see the new GT3 not available with a manual transmission.

That said, clicking a couple of times with a finger instead of also shifting a manual transmission (while threshold braking) absolutely does remove a cognitive load and I think may make the car "more fun" on track and not just faster.

Really don't understand this thread. Is it posted because someone has a 930 with a gearbox that doesn't allow them to do a heal and toe downshift without double clutching? Most likely they just need to get their transaxle rebuilt.

Never had a problem doing single clutch heel and toe downshifts in my GT3 with matching revs and doubt I ever will.

Actually, the funny thing is I double clutch more often in the WRX than the 930. Why? Because you can't shift fast in the 930. Period. So you might as well move the shifter very slow and let the syncros work some of the time. Although I still double clutch when it needs it. For the WRX, I can shift very fast while double clutching and it's almost faster than single clutching because it just falls into gear, hard to explain.

Does anyone understand a happy medium around here??

Just because I don't want overly modern square/rectangle house with straight lines everywhere, electronic voice controlled everything and uncomfortable very non plush furniture does not mean I want to sleep in a log cabin on pine straws or a pile of dirt and talk via telegraph. There are plenty of places in be.

Look at it like boxer briefs. Just enough support without being too loose or chafing your crotch. Happy medium. Clutch H pattern manual. Requires just enough driver involvement to make you feel like you're the one in charge of the result without overworking you for the heck of it. Happy medium.

I even use clutch manuals on video games when I can because it's even more fun there too. And I'm talking about with a joystick.

If fast track times were my sole objective, I would want a PDK. It's just faster and provides more flexibility than a traditional manual.

That said, I have a 6MT for a reason. I like the involvement of the driving experience. I don't track, but I enjoy the experience of rowing through the gears and executing proper heel toe downshifts.

I guess I'm agnostic on your question. I like the experience of the MT, but the GT3 is a track oriented car and the PDK is the fastest way around the track.

On the street, the stick is envolving and enjoyable experience (except in rush hour traffic).

On the track it is over envolving compared to automatic as it produces a slight distruption in achieving efficient lap times. The better the driver the less distruption but still a distruption none the less.

Some people fancy the additional work involved in rowing through the gears and dancing on pedals while others fancy working on optimal line and entry/exit speed combinations.

After being in a Scuderia I can honestly say there is nothing boring or disconnected about having paddle shift.

It is going to be an interesting 2013 of feedback from the new PDK owners.

Double clutching is not necessary or even useful on a modern full-synchro transmission.

The 915 gearbox in my 73 is fully synchro and it definitely benefits from it (but maybe 40 years old is not what you meant by modern )

I consider the G50 modern enough. The 915 is in the tractor age.
