Default 991.1 GT3 Steering wheel change

Good day everyone - could use your input / help please.

My 991.1 GT3 is still equipped with the standard large diameter / silver steering wheel and I am rather tired of looking at it plus it is just too big in my opinion - so, looking around , past those extra expensive 991.2RS wheels I find the GT4RS steering wheel to be absolutely perfect ( link : https://www.suncoastparts.com/produc...t4rsswhal.html). It's smaller and black with blue stitching - PERFECT.

Porsche dealers / mechanics in the US say simply that it can't be done....spoke to several, called a dealer in Germany, same answer. My humble opinion is that it should fit mechanical and the bottleneck could be the programing of the PDK paddles perhaps ....? Can someone Sheed some light on this, has some experience or point me in the right direction to figure it out and get it done please - thank you in advance, much appreciated.

Works fine, plug and play including the paddles and air bag... but odds are Porsche dealers won't want to touch it. Just order the steering wheel and air bag and have it installed somewhere it's literally a 10 minute job.

its probably a DIY install unless it needs some (re)programming... which it sounds like it doesn't

Great thing about a GT3 is no buttons on the wheel. Multifunction and sport chrono **** is the only thing that isn't compatible and they aren't present in this case.

I just picked up a .2 style wheel that also has heat. I wonder if there’s a power plug in the column harness?

Thank you for the feedback @JCviggen and @Larry Cable ….just ordered the GT4RS wheel with blue stitching, PDK lever has been updated already, will send pictures once the wheel is installed. 4 - 6 month lead time though

Cheers and all the very best for 2024 everyone!

you *can* do this yourself, disconnet battery, release and disconnect airbag, remove bolt holding wheel to column, disconnect wiring harnesses, reverse...

Hence the GT4RS wheel, it’s cheaper (2500USD) and smaller than the standard trucker wheel…plus airbag of course. It’s the first thing I look at when getting in the car and on track it’s just a bit too big for my liking…haven’t found a better alternative.

Do you need an airbag too? Not sure the 991.1 GT3 airbag will fit.

Yes you need a new airbag, unfortunately…will set you back around 1300USD.

As a few have mentioned, the .1RS, .2 GT3 and GT3RS, and 718 GT4 steering wheels all swap in to the .1 GT3 without issues and without the need for coding -- you'll need the .2 style small-diameter airbag to match the new steering wheel. I did this swap myself about a year and a half ago; it is quite easy to do and takes about 15 minutes. There's a couple in-depth guides on RL and on YouTube.

The "gotchas" are quite minor. Make sure to disconnect the battery for 30-60min prior to unplugging the airbag from the stock wheel, otherwise the car will throw SRS warning lights which you will have to go to the dealer to have cleared. You'll need a 12mm XZN/triple-square drive bit to remove and reinstall the wheel. Buy a new OEM wheel bolt for a few bucks, or if you prefer, you can re-use the OEM steering wheel bolt -- you'll have to clean the used thread locker off of the threads with a brush and reapply some fresh low-strength (blue) thread locker. There is no issue re-using the wheel bolt as it is not torque to yield. When installing the steering wheel, make sure you line up the notch in the steering wheel hub with the dimple on the steering column splines to maintain steering wheel centering.

You can sell the .1 wheel and airbag to a 997 owner as it's an aesthetic upgrade for that car. This should help defray the cost of the swap a little bit.

The .2 wheel is a huge improvement in the interior of the .1 -- I always found the .1 wheel to stick out like a sore thumb as it does not match the modern styling of the rest of the 991 interior. I had my wheel reupholstered with lava orange stitching and 12 o'clock stripe to match the lava orange .1RS interior that was swapped into my car by the prior owner.

Good day @NNayak ...thank you for your in depth install instructions, much appreciated. Also, my Steering wheel will be available to 997 owners in a few month - great idea, thanks!

Looks really nice in your Car, huge upgrade indeed over the OEM one, now swop the OEM PDK lever to the 992 style and its almost a new car
