The AMG GTR is faster than the 991.2 GT3 so why is it less popular?

You need to be the right size for an STO, a bit of a struggle if you're tall. It's really not an R8 in that regard. Also in Europe at least it's too loud for many tracks bone stock... however it is fun if you don't mind getting a lot of attention.

Too loud for the racetrack is a non sequitur where I live.

6' 2", so might not fit with helmet. Probably for the better.

I'm 6'3 in freedom units and it was far from ideal, certainly worse than sitting in any 911...

Default AMG GT S & TTS side-by-side, then GT3

After typing the message below and having owned a ‘15 911 TTS, a ‘16 AMG GT S (these two side-by-side for over a year), an ‘18 GT3 (991.2) and a ‘21 911 TTS (which will be traded on a ‘24 GT3 that has locked), I think it comes down to this in my case: the 911s provide a more a sports-car-like experience with better handling, a better ride but less drama than AMG GT cars. The AMG experience, based only on my GT S ownership, felt heavier, was less precise with placement but provided more drama in sound, more low-end torque and a more distinctive appearance at the time. The 991.2 GT3 handled great, was fine as a daily driver, and for day-to-day driving, I never felt it lacked torque, as long as I had the engine in a good part of the rev band at the appropriate time.

Driving the three cars should pretty quickly sort out which car makes a better daily driver for you, not only for the driving experience but also for practicality because a GT3 with fixed-backrest CF bucket seats, storage doesn’t compare with the AMG car’s hatch. If you plan to take long trips, the 991.2 GT3 was turning about 3,000 RPM at 60 mph and as I recall, the GT S engine was loafing at a much lower RPM at highway speeds. (The 992 TTS turns about 1,400 RPM at 60 mph in 8th gear.) For a track weapon, I’d want a GT3 for the comparative nimbleness, likely control at the limit and, as pointed out by others, reliability (brakes, etc.).

My wife and I had a ‘16 AMG GTS and ‘15 911 TTS (991.1) at the same time. The AMG GT S was a hoot to drive - loud like a NASCAR stocker, plenty of torque but rode like a ‘50s pick-up truck. The GT S was a sledgehammer, the 911 was a surgical scalpel. I enjoyed both equally on the road and in my limited experience on the track. The 991.1 TTS was quiet unlike my current 992 TTS, which after about 2,000 miles began to sound great. When driving the ‘15 TTS, I felt I could place the car within a couple mm of where I wanted. I never felt the AMG was that precise - at least in that generation, and it felt much bigger and heavier. I drove the AMG GT S at an AMG performance driving academy and enjoyed it but we didn’t push as hard as I’ve driven the 991.1 and 992 TTSs and GT3s at pretty close to my 10/10ths at the Porsche Experience Center in L.A. My 991.2 GT3 took the handling aspect of enjoyment to another level and the performance on twisty driving roads was phenomenal in terms of precision and confidence when at speed. Plus, I enjoyed owning a car that was so close in design and development to Porsche’s motorsports race cars.
