Mildly Amusing Parts Failure - Touring Shifter broke!
I thought the group might find a recent part failure on my Touring shifter humorous and a little insightful.
While out driving last weekend, I thought I heard a rattle or hollow sound coming from the shifter whenever I'd shift into 2nd or 4th gear. At first I thought it was my imagination but when I returned home I took a few minutes with the engine off to cycle through the gates to see if I could replicate the sound. And sure enough, there was a rattle coming from the silver shift pattern piece incorporated into the shaft.
I poked at it for a moment or two and realized it was lose - I applied a little upward pressure on the shaft where the plate and shaft meet and the damn thing just popped off! Besides the surprise, I was heartbroken you learn that the shift pattern piece is an incredibly delicate piece of plastic, the likes of which you'd get in a model car kit. I had always assumed that it was this amazing piece of milled aluminum! As you can see, there should be two semi-triangular pieces connecting to the shifter but one broke and is still in the shaft.
Suffice it to say, I stopped by the dealership yesterday and aside from the SA and my salesman being as entertained as I was to realize the primary touchpoint of the most engaging part of the car was PLASTIC, we looked into the repair. Apparently, Porsche won't replace this $1.99 piece of plastic... Oh no, the proper repair is a full replacement of the shaft and boot! HA! I love Porsche's quality standards, but the price delta is just amazing - the full repair will run approximately $1200 (the part is approx $700.00) but it's obviously covered under warranty.
FYI, this is the first and only unscheduled warranty item in 3 years of ownership.

Yeah, Scotty. Definitely covered by warranty. And if it feels loose, that small plastic tab is probably broken.
Part doesn’t seem hard to come by - mine will be delivered to the dealer on Tuesday.
