The Pegasus decal I've been seeing : what's the story?

So, random question, I know... but I've been seeing mostly Speedsters and some GT3's, with the red Pegasus decal placed on the right side, behind the front fender. What's the story behind it? I'd really like to know, since it actually seems to be a really nice touch and gives a nice feeling of nostalgia.

I know the obvious mobil oil ties, but was wondering if it was something more.

Goes back to the Mobil Oil racing sponsorship with the 356 and early 911 long hood.

I don't know for certain of the earliest use of the Pegasus decal but it goes back at least to the 1953 Carrera Panamericana 550. And yes it is a marketing symbol for the old Mobil (Standard Oil of New York)

Some more detail below. James Dean + 356 = cool is probably part of the equation.

Some of the mobil stations in California still have giant signs with the pegasus. IDK about everywhere else.

the mobil down by my entrance to the freeway where I live.
but I always associated the logo with 50s Porsche Racing.

Honestly, it looks kinda contrived on newer cars...
On a 356 maybe, but on speedster and/or GT4 Spyder... give me a break

Anyone know a good place to get a high quality decal?

I mean, I get it, it adds a bit of nostalgia to the car... but yeah, it's kinda why I asked the question. Its gotta have some story behind it if I'm seeing the decal on brand new Speedsters.

Originally from the Greek mythology, Pegasus represents power and speed, performance and immortality like no other mythical creature. No wonder, then, that the red winged horse had cult status from the outset and can be found on the vehicles of racing legends and rally drivers as well as Porsche owners and hobby drivers.

The winged horse used to be part of the Mobiloil logo – known today as ExxonMobil after the merger with Exxon. Like every brand, the Pegasus has developed over the years and has been adapted to the zeitgeist. Porsche Tequipment now returns an original version of the Pegasus from Mobiloil as a decal.

Historically correct, the Pegasus is always affixed in the direction of travel and at an angle of -3°. For the driver side, this means: He flies from right to left. On the passenger's side, it is reversed and thus also applied in the direction of travel. The self-adhering films can also help you revive the Pegasus myth and cult of times past.

The adhesive set is available in two different sizes: The length of the diagonal from the wing tip to the furthermost front hoof is 16.5 cm or 20.5 cm.

In my collection of porcelain signs I have managed to get five of these 1950's large double sided Pegasus's and quite a few associated Mobil signs. Probably twenty in all.
I've always thought the Pegasus and Gargoyle were attractive and have been collecting these porcelain signs since I was a kid.
The round Mobiloil Gargoyle sign in the center was found at an old racetrack still attached to the wall of a collapsed building that I lifted up about five years ago.

Here is the basic timeline of Mobils logo history. There are variations and overlaps, but this is a decent representation of the history.

Thx for sharing, when I was a kid I loved seeing the Pegasus logos. I use to have a lot of kites and that would be my kite logos, and stickers on my bike. Not sure if kids still play with either now, 10 years old in the 70’s give me a bike and a kite I was in heaven.

Not a Pegasus but this is the extent of my livery ; )
