The Pegasus decal I've been seeing : what's the story?
So, random question, I know... but I've been seeing mostly Speedsters and some GT3's, with the red Pegasus decal placed on the right side, behind the front fender. What's the story behind it? I'd really like to know, since it actually seems to be a really nice touch and gives a nice feeling of nostalgia.
I know the obvious mobil oil ties, but was wondering if it was something more. |
Goes back to the Mobil Oil racing sponsorship with the 356 and early 911 long hood.

Some more detail below. James Dean + 356 = cool is probably part of the equation.

Some of the mobil stations in California still have giant signs with the pegasus. IDK about everywhere else.

Honestly, it looks kinda contrived on newer cars...
On a 356 maybe, but on speedster and/or GT4 Spyder... give me a break |
Anyone know a good place to get a high quality decal?

Originally from the Greek mythology, Pegasus represents power and speed, performance and immortality like no other mythical creature. No wonder, then, that the red winged horse had cult status from the outset and can be found on the vehicles of racing legends and rally drivers as well as Porsche owners and hobby drivers. The winged horse used to be part of the Mobiloil logo – known today as ExxonMobil after the merger with Exxon. Like every brand, the Pegasus has developed over the years and has been adapted to the zeitgeist. Porsche Tequipment now returns an original version of the Pegasus from Mobiloil as a decal. Historically correct, the Pegasus is always affixed in the direction of travel and at an angle of -3°. For the driver side, this means: He flies from right to left. On the passenger's side, it is reversed and thus also applied in the direction of travel. The self-adhering films can also help you revive the Pegasus myth and cult of times past. The adhesive set is available in two different sizes: The length of the diagonal from the wing tip to the furthermost front hoof is 16.5 cm or 20.5 cm. |

In my collection of porcelain signs I have managed to get five of these 1950's large double sided Pegasus's and quite a few associated Mobil signs. Probably twenty in all.
I've always thought the Pegasus and Gargoyle were attractive and have been collecting these porcelain signs since I was a kid. The round Mobiloil Gargoyle sign in the center was found at an old racetrack still attached to the wall of a collapsed building that I lifted up about five years ago. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...bb12aa4d8d.png |
Here is the basic timeline of Mobils logo history. There are variations and overlaps, but this is a decent representation of the history.

Has anyone figured out where to order a high quality pegasus decal set that isn't the $100 set that Suncoast sells? Also, does anyone know if the ones picture on the Speedsters above are 6.5" or 8"?

The "Pigasus" is priceless humor on a diesel Cayenne...
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...8ca95ab69f.png I think there are at least four Pegasus signs in this picture...https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...3287cfc83a.png |

@928 GT R Tell me about that pair of Seth Morrison pro model skis, I haven't seen those since my knees worked properly!
|
Thank you @TheMurse !!! The ones you have linked are listed at 4.5" but the ones sold by Suncoast are either 6.5" or 8" and from the looks of some of the pictures above (particularly the heritage Speedster), my guess is that the OEM decals are the 8" size. I'd be curious to see how a 4.5" pegasus decal looks. @rshanholtz Do you have any insight on the approximate size of the decal shown on the Speedster you have pictured above? |

I also recall, they were some of the first skis with Piezoelectric dampers to eliminate specific frequency vibrations... Thanks for jogging the memories! D |

Wow, it takes someone from within the industry to recognize those beasts. They were all mountain/extreme skis that I used for a couple of seasons. K2 gave them to me when we were filming some big air footage for K2 at Squaw. That was around 1996 or 97 when Seth had gained fame and sponsorship at K2 and those Promodellers (sp?) were the first of many skis with his name on them.

These are factory CXX, slightly different than what you can purchase at the Porsche parts counter. Porsche charges about $500 for the factory option.

Pegasus decals on my daily driver - the Dakar. Fitted by Porsche from new - this is the smaller (4.5") one. Clearly a matter of opinion but I think it looks good and the colour picks up on the brakes and towing eyes. |
Finally got around to doing mine. Also saw a cool 356 sporting the Pegasus decals at a recent C&C.

Here what I got. Now you can debate what an oil brand sign does on a electric car. I don't care and like the style and the contrast. I took care on the correct inclination angle... |
