Improved license plate mounting holes

The factory method of mounting a rear license plate is to basically sink sheet metal screws directly into the plastic bumper and call it done. It's a pretty sloppy solution and I'd like to see if it can be improved. My BMW's had female threaded receptacles in the bumper with matching machine screws for the plate.
I was wondering if anyone has drilled out the existing holes and put in proper hardware with machine screws and standoffs? If not I may tackle this project on my own but wanted to get any insight if it's been done before. Perhaps there's even a generic commercially available kit that would work.

Have you seen the item in the 991 Forum from a Rennlister there? I'll try to find the link.
