Default 458 VS 991.1 GT3

Yup another one of these threads, so excuse me while i ramble on & not even have a clear question or point at the end...

Now that price deltas are getting closer, you can basically buy a 458 for close to a 991.1GT3 price, a little more but close enough. Recently i bought a 458 after trying the 991.2 Manual GT3 (wasn't super overwhelmed to justify the .2 price)

Now considering a 991.1 PDK so test drove a couple of them lately and for some reason the PDK just seems "too perfect" & precise, maybe even a little too easy to operate, it feels as if its all 1 continuous gear..with the 458 DCT trans you feel the shift, while its smooth, there is still a little bit of a snap and drama on down shifts, which i'm not feeling with the PDK..i of course drove the cars in PDK sport, i'm also noticing that with the GT3 i'm having to dirve hard, and at much higher RPM's to get a "feel" out of the car, while the 458 is ok at lower speeds around town, you still get that sound and feel, i don't goto the track, however love the twisty canyons.

Little too much attention with the 458, and i'm a die hard Porsche guy, nothing like the 911 timeless shape with that flat 6 & the entire Porsche car culture..but then, that italian Mid engine V8 mistress just keeps on beckoning me & luring me in..

I am still trying to talk myself into a GT3, particularly a GT Silver 2015/2016 with full leather, PCCB & Buckets..

Would love to hear some thoughts on this, especially from people who considered both of these amazing automobiles.

Pic from last week in the canyons with the 458

Why not get a nice 997 RS like your buddy? ;-)
991 cars without track use makes no sense imho.

I had a 997S as my DD for 4 years, while i love the 997, i'm done with that series, the interior, everything, i'm just over- I also want a car i can drive daily (i've driven my 360 Gated Manual Modena daily for a year put 10k miles) i think the 991 Generation and the 458 are much easier to daily then a 997RS or 997GT3

If the attention that the Ferrari (or Lambo or Mac) draws didn't bother me and I didn't want to track the car, that would be my choice. But since the attention would bother me and I do go to the track, I own a GT3.

I think a .1 RS is what you should consider. Not as much attention as the 458, but still a "presence", and should have more "go" than the .1 GT3.

Or maybe just keep the 458 and enjoy that until you get bored and then move on

458 is selling for around 160-200k....you are in the .2 991 GT3 range now...not the .1 also you should consider a .1 GT3 RS.

As far as PDK goes...not sure why you felt it was 1 continuous gear especially in sport more. PDK rev matches perfectly on down shift so the car doesn’t jerk and get unbalanced. You don’t want a jerk or snap feeling on downshift . On up shift PDK pops off very quick shifts especially in the .2 cars.

I have a 458 Italia and ran it alongside a 991.2GT3 PDK until i sold the GT3 last June..I still have my 458 and have just picked up my new GT3 RS WP..I agree 100% with your views on the differences between the GT3 and 458..The 458 is a very special Ferrari indeed and a surefire future classic..Its also more special than Porsches albeit a bit too showy at times IMO..I sourced a Grigio Silverstone 458 for this very reason and it seems to draw much less attention than the same car in a bright Red or Yellow.
My new RS is a different proposition to the GT3 , much more capable and the only Porsche i've had which feels every bit as special as a 458..Both are long keepers as i can't think of another NA super car i'd replace them with..The 458 is extremely sensitive to slightly off wheel alignment so having a good geo done is a no brainer in my book.

The 458 is one of the best cars I’ve owned, and not sure I would ever DD a Ferrari personally. 2 years ago I traded my 2016 RS for a 458 Spider, and guess what I got another RS 2019 because I missed the RS that much. I think they’re a perfect garage pair if you can do it. The 458 is a special car and pretty much bullet proof, unfortunately I caved and sold the 458 for a 675LT because I had to good NA cars/will not part with the RS again. Lots of 458’s out there produced for 6 years so scarcity will never be a problem as the same for GT3’s you can always get one. I would choose 458 over a GT3 on sound alone. If cost if a concern you must buy a warranty for about 5500.00 annually unless you have e a good indi shop ......Porsche is the better buy in that regard, but experience would be the Ferrari as I say all should own one of them once in your life being a car guy.

As said earlier I personally wouldn’t DD any of these cars as my DD is pretty boring to the office, and tooling around town. Rather take my toys track day or back mountain roads on weekends. Well, will take the wife out to a swagg place to eat in the 675LT for date night.

Guys don't feed the troll. :-) Tarek is a local buddy and he's very conflicted. See, you ask same question on the ferrari board and you get the inverse of these responses. Choices are awesome.

First, 458 prices are definitely in the range of 991.1GT cars for higher mileage examples. I think price-wise they are a compare.

Now to be frank, i don't really love the 991 GT cars myself, so maybe i have a "get off my lawn the old **** is better" point of view here...

these comments are on the street, i've not driven a 458 on track

the ferrari feels faster, sounds amazing, has more 'drama' in the way the chassis feels, steering is WAY too direct off center, feels twitchy on turn in and corner entry, the chassis is calibrated like it's a little too over damped or over sprung, looks 'exotic', nice interior, it feels italian. Similar performance levels with more drama.

the gt3 looks like very other 911, the transmission is the best dual clutch on the market, its seamless with little drama, the chassis feels more compliant but when pushed feels 'stuck', the interior is german, the exterior is german, which is basically understated, steering is best on the market, fantastic turn in, corner entry, and control on exit, gets it done, feels very "german".

$ for $ I'll take the porsche but some say i'm a porsche bigot. Maybe.

There.

Thx for all the replies guys..458's you can find ones with whats considered high miles in the ferrari world so 20k miles in the $140s so not far off from 991GT3. mine has 28K miles. great replies so far..except from @Spyerx hahaha, see, he drove my 458 for 5 minutes (after i took his keys out of his RS & refused to give back to him unless he drove the 458 lol) and it was foggy out in the canyons at the time , i will soon get him to drive it in better conditions so he can make a proper assessment..

I am indeed very conflicted, me Tarek, always a Porsche guy, even my business revolves around Porsche..so what am i doing with these Italian mistresses..but oh they are so sexy!

Little video of last weeks canyon drive..i was very impressed at how this car handled in the canyons.

The Porsche GT cars don't really come alive until they are above 5k rpm's. Keep it in the proper rev range and it's awesome.
Drive it like a grandma and it is very docile.

Have both, can't go wrong with either.

the correct answer, as always, is get both.
