Rob / Suitcase make a good point, had the same issue with a purchase in AZ. However, if you did pay local tax I believe you get credit in the state where you register in your home state so not a double dip. (At messy here in Colorado)

OP said he was buying the car from another Rennlister. Private sales don't collect tax. You pay that when you title/register the car in your home state...

I drove my 993TT back from santa monica to NJ in early december 10 years ago.

While it ended fine, there was some major white knuckles in the snow going through Albuquerque and into the plains of texas. I was on normal summer tires, not cup tires.

normally i'd say drive it, but given the potential weather, ship it.

Went the drive in CA for a bit then ship it. Did about 600 miles in the mountains just outside of LA in about 24 hours.

Car is amazing, and @SamG was super accommodating and helpful.
