Great idea and generous offer! This would be my choice.

I agree that you’ve missed the window this year to do the trip on stock tires. You’d also have a limited route selection- Tioga pass through Yosemite will almost certainly be closed by Thanksgiving, for example. Thus the “smart” thing to do would be to ship it...

That said I’d probably drive it.

Some of my most indelible car memories are of Porsches on snow and ice- as long as the snow stays below splitter level the 911 makes a great snowmobile:

If I lived somewhere with an actual winter I would want to be “that guy”; at this moment I can think of nothing cooler than winter tires on a Touring. Ok, maybe Steve McQueen driving a Touring with winter tires. Point being where you live I’d want a set of winter rims and tires, and that being the case why not bolt them on in California and go make some memories? Yes it’s a bit of a pain, but what worth doing isn’t?

I’ll personally guarantee* you won’t come back hating the car (*invalid the car doesn’t have nose lift):

P.S- I’m in a romantic mood, feel free to ignore the above (clearly questionable) advice. Though I’m happy to enable with sone route suggestions.

I'm with the guys who said fly out and drive around CA and then ship it with Plycar (or whichever national brand auto transport gives you the best overall deal, i.e. best combo of price and timing). The cross country trip would be interesting for the first day or two and then get monotonous in the middle of the country--plus, the weather is so uncertain this time of year.

But I totally applaud your willingness to drive it and not save it for the next guy. Enjoy!

Assuming it's fitted with the right tires and you can avoid foul weather, when will you ever have the opportunity to do it again?

You could ride shotgun in the truck transporting your car. Touring while the touring stays safe!

Put some Michelin 4S tires on and drive it. It will make memories you will never forget.

Why won't pilot alpine on stock rims work? If you're worried about size you'll be fine. I used them last winter on stock rims

Given the timing it'll be a pretty boring route if you decide to drive , so just ship it & plan a proper trip next year.

It also would be around Thanksgiving, so summer tires could be an issue.

If shipping, any suggestions? I've requested quotes from Intercity and Reliable. Haven't had a chance to talk to them, but have been wondering about how long it would take.
After 40 years, almost 70 911's, 959, and almost every RS's my advice is drive it. The cars I've love the most are the cars I drive the most. The cars I drive the most are the cars I love the most. In a GT3 Touring it's very comfortable in 4 days. And, it will be an adventure with your car you won't ever forget.

I would ship it and then spend 5 days driving the car on interesting roads. I love my touring, but it's boring and loud on the freeway.

Reminds me of a thread from about 4 years ago on a Shelby GT500 forum. Owner was so excited that he bought a new Dodge Hellcat out east. Same time of year. He fly’s out to get the car. Drives it all the way back (more than 1000 miles) to his home in Wisconsin. Last 30 miles it starts to snow. Makes it his street (500 yards from his house) and loses control and slides into a sign and dinks up the front end. Has to have the front end replaced and repainted. Paint never matched the lime green on the rest of his car. He was adamant before he left on the trip how everyone was being too cautious. Needless to say he ate some humble pie after that.

Have it shipped. Weather is too unpredictable this time a year.
