Correct, the PDK did launch with the 997.2, but before that Porsche had the Tiptronic, another stout transmission (when equipped in the turbo) but obviously not to the level of the PDK. Most 997.1 turbos were able to produce more consistent launches and often quicker 0-60 and qtr mile times as a result. The same holds true for vehicles with PDK.
As others have mentioned, typically getting to the sweet spot of launching any manual vehicle requires practice. Launch control helps that somewhat on modern vehicles. Without using launch control and simply mashing the gas and dropping the clutch, one would typically find the right RMP and right amount of clutch release travel (before engagement) that will enable the car to take off with minimal wheel spin. Track condition, tires and road surface play a part too. One of the reasons the 911 turbo can achieve its performance is due to AWD. Having owned them, it is incredibles how it all comes together, e.g. boost, torque and then rocket off.
