Hoshino, a rookie, made two costly mistakes at the beginning of the race, and in my humble opinion he was to blame on that incident with Fassler; the Corvette (GTE Pro) was already half a length ahead of the Porsche (GTE Am), which should have taken the outside as it had blue flags instead of trying to hit the apex
As I recall it, I thought it was Fassler's fault. The Proton car was slower but it was his turn at that point. Fassler, is the pro and should have heeded way at that point and passed thereafter. Not enough room for a side by side there IMHO.
More than enough room on the outside, per the footage; #88 went for the apex and in my opinion he didn’t even see the Corvette coming —let’s not forget that Hoshino is a rookie in his late fifties; he doesn’t have the skills of a pro nor the reflexes and sight of a young man.
Another thing - the safety car procedure (they use 3) has split the 51 Ferrari and 92 Porsche over a minute ahead of the rest of the GTE Pro leaders (I.e., 93 Porsche, remaining Corvette, several Ford GTs), so it’s basically a two horse race at this point, assuming neither 51 nor 92 falter. The same thing happened last year with the pink pig Porsche (also the 92 car). Given the parity of BOP, the other cars can’t make up 60 seconds.
Good race this year. Watched an honest 12 hrs of it and I'm happy to see the US based teams doing well. I was hoping Core Autosport would come out on top out of the Porsche GT teams, but a spot on the podium is still a great achievement.
