for most of us GT guys I think we either owned or wanted to own air cooled 911 as a kid, kind like a lot of the corvette guys buy a 57 chevy. In the same ways the value at times is not just for originals but for modernized cars.I was thinking about an air-cooled car, but wonder if the nostalgia is worth, no warranty, things that break car thats relatively slow these days, any other thoughts?
IMHO a well sorted and maintained later gen air cooled car like a 964 is a great compliment to a new water cooled car. I also will bet that in 20 years my 964 will be more reliable than my 991.2 GT3. There's a heck of a lot less stuff to go wrong.
I see all these pro touring camaro guys and I wonder why dont they just buy a 1LE, I wonder if they see a Singer and think, what dont they just buy a GT3
and don't underestimate this. very very hard to find a good one (914/6) and when you do, they are in the 6 figures now. but I take this over any long hood short of S and RS. I never liked 914 until I drove this. after the drive, I didnt care how much he wanted for it.
I'm on team 993 all the way but the question is somewhat valid-
What other cars can anyone say are cult like and coveted as highly on a broad scope as air cooled 911's?
Nobody collects C4/C5 corvettes
Nobody collects 1980's anything besides VERY specialized models: e30 M3, 88 M5, 86 m6?? and what else?

I'll say this however- the NSX is the best 90's car to drive out of anything (besides F40/ 993GT2/ F1/ type stuff). If you buy a 60k NSX vs a 60K 964/993 I can tell you which one will be more reliable and fixable...
Mooty, I'm dying laughing: I remember asking you your opinion about 964's and Longhoods YEARS ago and I was considering adding some AC after initially primarily being a 997 GT guy. I don't remember the exact words but it was something like: "slow antique pieces of crap.....not my cup of tea, but do what you like". You clearly got bitten by a BIG AC bug! Because I still have those two AC cars I was considering years ago and looks like you have a literal FLEET of them.

57 Chevy was more reliable and cheaper to own than any 911. In the late 60’s and early 70’s if you needed a part for a 911 and most likely it wasn’t in the US Porsche-Audi sent a telex from NJ to Germany. When it came 3 weeks later maybe it was the right one, maybe not. Time has a way of smoothing a lot of edges.

Favorite daily driver 4-season AC: 964 C2 coupe. Daily drove one for two years. Put winter tires and take it skiing. Now, there are much better DD via WC 911s. Maybe a restomod version?
Favorite year-round in SoCal: 911SC cab. Longest ownership duration at 9.5 years. I think about buying it back for nostalgia but desire is not strong enough to do so.
Favorite AC to drive at the limit: 69 911S (upgraded 2.7 spec engine and 7” 911R Fuchs) time trial car. Miss this car the most and would buy it again today. Lightweight is it.
Favorite backroad AC: 914/6. Made me look like a great driver. Would buy a restomod version with stiffer chassis, more precise shifter and more hp engine.

69e. Unrestored but in very good condition for not being. Original except some interior bits: seats, steering wheel and shift ****. I did a trade for it with a very good friend who brought me into this hobby/addiction years ago. So, in addition to loving a well patina'd but good condition longhood, it comes with some personal nostalgic value as a very good friend's former car.
Black RS or white Carrera Cup USA? Loved both of em but the Cup USA belonged in someone's museum (which is where it will end up one day I'm sure with 5-6kmi on the clock). It's one of a couple cars I had to sell cause just TOO nice for my use of actually driving the car!
