in Virginia, speeding is a class c misdemeanor for 20 plus miles above speeding limit or going above 80 mph. It can involve jail time. One of the car reporters had to do jail time if i remember correctly doing 93 in 55 mph zone .
but it does not mean you avoid the whole state , just be careful
Well thank you so much everybody for all the really useful input. I've come up with the following route as a compromise to take in the Tail of the Dragon and to avoid VA. It's a bit longer (around 3 hours) but let me know what you think!
I've heard the VA hate before but I've running up and down 81 and exploring the roads in and around Washington and Jefferson National Forest for years and never had a problem. There are long site lines on 81 and if you run with traffic and pay attention to the obvious crossovers you should be fine. I just don't see a lot of police in SW VA on the interstate and even less on the secondary roads.
On the other hand, the roads in the area are some of the best maintained and most entertaining and scenic that you'll find anywhere in the country. My suggestion: head east on 64 and stop at The Greenbrier for an overnight (http://www.greenbrier.com/). When you're ready to leave take 92 up to Rimel, then take 39 all the way down the mountain into Lexington, VA. From there you can hop on 81 or extend the scenic tour by taking 252 North, which parallels 81 up to Staunton and grab 81 from there. Lexington and Stauton have great downtown areas with a lot of history and are worth a quick walking tour if you need to stretch your legs.
If you still have time to kill run up the other side of the Shenandoah Valley and pick up Skyline Drive north to 66. Unbelievable vistas but here you really must obey the speed limit, which is 35mph (http://www.dangerousroads.org/north-...ine-drive.html).

I went to college in Lexington, VA; got a ticket for 3 over in 2011.
On second thought, scratch the last 252 leg unless you loop back to it from Lexington because that last segment of 39 (east of 252 to Lexington) has some of the best turns on the whole route. Just stay on 39 into Lexington and go from there. If were it me I'd do short loop up to the Blue Ridge Parkway and back down before getting back on 81. See below.
68 from morgan town to maryland is a fantastic road, well paved , very few trucks, and there are plenty of spots when you can push the car ???
I take it every time i am heading to dc from pittsburgh
