It looks like the 718 GT4 is going to have the 4.0 engine from the GT3.0 and manual gearbox. Whilst I appreciate its a different prospect from a 991.1, which would you buy? Im considering the GT4 as is a smaller and more nimble car and with the 4.0 engine should be a great drive.
It’s not really smaller and more nimble. Wheelbase on the GT3 is actually shorter and with the rear wheel steering it’s sort of effectively shorter still.
The mid-engine vs. rear-engine dynamics make them different. Just two different animals, really.
Do you have some reason to believe you’ll actually get a GT4 if you want one?
I think I’d prefer the GT4 if only for the manual.
If you’re not in a hurry, maybe throw your hat in the ring and treat the GT3 as a backup plan.
Impossible to say. Too many unknowns about the GT4. It would need to be a big upgrade on the old GT4 as the .1 GT3 is a superior car to the 981 GT4 in every way I can think of (I owned both). I guess if manual is a big thing then it becomes a fairly easy decision.

Both are excellent cars but very different. I preferred my GT4 to the 991.1 GT3 mainly because I found it more engaging to drive a manual than the PDK-S in the GT3. The downside with the GT4 was that it had the Carrera S engine rather than a true GT engine. That looks like it may change with the new GT4 which will make it the pick of the crop. If I were you, I would wait so long as you're assured of an allocation. If not, life is short, buy the GT3 and trade up to the GT4 when it's released.
I think it comes down to the engine - if it comes with the 4l out of the GT3 and 450HP it will be brilliant but that is a lot of if. Either way you can't lose.
I'd get the 991 GT3 first and see if you actually get the allocation for GT4, pricing with ADM these days may be comparable for a low spec 2015 991 GT3.
I really think Porsche is going to test the GT platform with a Turbo GT4. This will let them gauge the market reaction for GT3 turbo.
Just look at the rear exhaust tips, typical turbo configuration on GT4 spy shots.
You know what they say "want in one hand, s*** in the other hand - at the end of the day what do you have?"
I don't understand how this can be a question as there is a) no announcement from Porsche as to the 718 GT4 even being a production model car, and b) even when they announce it there is still a gamble if you can even get one, finally c) your already into 19' at this point if they announced it tomorrow most likely.
Why wait on speculation? Buy a 991 GT3 and drive it while you wait - the question is "do I want a car that exists or do I want to wait on a speculation/rumor of car in the pipeline?"
Not trying to be rude about it, but reality is it doesn't exist and nothing is given other than rumors.
If the 981.2 GT4 has the 4.0L engine (detuned) I would expect the price to go up significantly. The 981.1 GT4 started around $90k with essentially a Carrera S engine. Bumping up to a detuned GT3 4.0L I bet pushes the starting price into the high $110's to low $120's which means $130 with decent options. You could pick up a nicely option 991.1 GT3 for slightly more with an extended warranty.
Having gone from a 981.1 Cayman S, to a 991.1 C4S, to a 991.2 GT3, the GT3 is in another league. I haven't driven the GT4, but the Cayman in general feels subpar to the 911.
Go test drive the current GT4 and a 991.1 GT3. No better way to feel the difference.
If they did go turbo (which I hope they don't), it would def. be a TT6 from the Carrera range, not a 4-banger. You can't go racing in GT4 with a 4-banger turbo against TTV8, V10, V8, and TTV6 from the other competitors. This is a homologation car, so it matters.
