Default Rear license plate mounting question

It appears that the rear is not drilled for a plate from the factory and the dealer just screws some screws in. Is this correct?

I have rarely been satisfied with plate mountings as dealers tend to use mild steel screws which rust and then look like crap. I prefer stainless steel rivnuts with plastic machine screws and have retrofitted these to some of my vehicles. I have asked my dealer to skip the plate mounting, but I am curious if I am right that there are no holes and no “factory” screws or other provision for mounting of the rear plate.

No way dealers do that, right into the rear bumper

I wonder what Zuffenhausen will do when I pick mine up for euro delivery with the tourist plates...

Pretty sure they do. Here is a picture of an “unviolated” GT3 rear bumper.

There are “indents” cast into the rear bumper skin at the screw points, along with extra thickness. The dealer then uses self-tapping screws to attach the plate to these locations.

I was in a hurry to collect my car (pretty sure that's my Silver car in the photo above from Leipzig), so I told the dealer not to bother mounting the plate. I used their (non-rusting) self-tapping screws myself. Was very easy to do with just a #2 Philips screwdriver.

I put a small rubber grommet over each screw (between the car and the back of the license plate) to ensure that the plate wouldn't rattle or rub against the paint.

Do you think they are factory screws?

I assume they are factory screws - very nice quality provided by the dealer.

This. However, I did notice tighter clearances at the top with my CF frame then in .1, so you may need to check if you plan on reusing a frame.

WOW! Drilling holes into a $200k car bumper. Really they could have done something better.

If you don’t like it, you could probably make a mount that threads into the rear tow hook receptacle (right behind the plate) instead (like the ones that US Millworks makes for the front plate). I personally think the stock method works really well and if the plate sits too far from the bumper, the little lights won’t illuminate the plate properly at night.

Actually, it's just a license plate. Adding threads would add weight

Same deal as has been on the 991 Carreras as well. Nothing new.
