Default Touring Scotland

Hello fellas;

After a lot of great suggestions for my Germany/Aus/Fr vacation this year, I am planning on heading to Scotland for more of the same in the Spring. Renting a car in Edinburgh and driving around Scotland.

Anyone here have any experience? Never been to Scotland. Looking for general stuff to see/do and car stuff.

Are there any car rentals that have 911s on fleet?

Thanks!

I've driven a fair bit around Scotland and can assure you that you'll have a fantastic time there.
The western side of course has Loch Lomond etc and the roads around there are fabulous. Be sure to check this link out and the maps on it.

I live in Edinburgh, so can recommend it!

Not sure about rentals, though Hertz may be able to sort with enough warning.
we did a trip in October from Edinburgh, up to the highlands, Skye, Inverness, Glesmhee and back again, 3 days, probably 600 miles, I can check back and post some details if that helps?

The North Coast 500 has become very popular - great roads, but also now has traffic and police, best to look at the roads round about which are just as good, but quieter...

Drove around Scotland about 8 years back. Bypassed Aberdeen. Awesome time, checked out a bunch of castles. That's fun if you're into that. Stayed in Glasgow, Edinburgh and the Highlands. I'd go to all those places again. Took a drive to Saltcoats as well, one half of inlaws are from there. If you like hillwalking (hiking), that's a must do in Glencoe. Hiked in through the Lost Valley.

You'll have a good time, visit many pubs and check out a distillery or two.

looking to stay somewhere in the geographical center so we can rent a cottage for a week and drive around east/west/north/south.

Properly planned and researched, you should find some stunning scenery, roads and hotels. Later in the Spring is best for weather, and longer days.

You may struggle to find a 911 rental. Personally, I'd suggest a Boxster - practical, perfect size for the narrow roads, roof down when the sun comes out, and up when it rains - which it will

my son attends law school at University of Edinburgh...and prior to visiting him there, I have done a number of golf trips to Scotland with friends. Edinburgh is one of the finest Cities in the world let alone Europe. I will rent a car next spring when I visit him and do some driving myself so subscribed to this thread.

Porsche Travel Club has a Scotland tour in June. Very well organized, all inclusive, with great hotels, restaurants and roads. Check it out. My wife and I traveled with the Tour when we picked up our Targa (or tried to, they were having registration issues and gave us a loaner instead) and had a great time. We will be doing another tour next year.

If driving is the main reason for going, I would recommend avoiding the summer, which can be very busy in the Highlands.
can't promise the weather will comply...but adds to the fun! (Also can't promise it will comply in the summer, either...)

Have you considered this? Or at least copy the itinerary?
