Default Do you get Track Ins. for PCA DE's

I know - stupid question but just trying to get an Idea.

My background: Been tracking since 2003. Started in a NSX then a 997 GT3 then in a Spec Miata. Took a break for a few years. I recently bought a 991RS and signed up for a PCA DE. I'm debating if I should get it the track coverage or not. Haven't decided yet.

QUESTION: Do you get track Insurance for your GT3/RS every time you track it?

I have an Open Track policy for the year.

If you are only going to do a few events you may want Lockton, or something similar, that provides event coverage. I wouldn't do it without the insurance unless you can afford to write the check for a new RS and don't care about the money.

there are 3 reasons to purchase track insurance - people only consider the 1st one typically

1. driver error - this is then most people consider and discount assuming "it can't happen to me"
2. mechanical failure - this is outside your control - this happened to a co-worker and he wishes he'd considered it before turning down track insurance
3. environmental factors (oil on the track from the previous car)

track insurance covers all 3 failures - only one of which is "your" fault...

In before someone comes in here and swears they're covered under their regular auto policy then refuses to provide the name of their insurance company...

the "no" answers in the poll only consider reason #1 - I've seen track insurance used for items #2 and #3 far more often than #1…

+4. Old rule of thumb of unless you're comfortable with walking awy from a smouldering mass worth zero $, insure it.

Or they could be very rich. If you can't afford (or stomach) writing off $150k+, I think track insurance makes sense. Is it a good financial move over the long-run? Probably not...insurance companies are in business for a reason. But just the peace of mind alone is worth much of the cost IMO.

You forgot #4, which is the other jackasses on the track, unless you consider them "environmental factors" . My only significant incident on track was when another driver lost control. I've had several other near misses when other drivers spun out, bounced off a wall, or otherwise unexpectedly departed from the racing line.

For my part, I never used insurance when I used to tow a dedicated track car well below any modern GT car. But when I started to drive a six-figure car to and from the track, I decided it was well worth it.

I have never paid for track insurance. Some years I did 30+ track days a year. I’m not sure what the right answer is to your question though. It is very unlikely you will total your car. However if you do it would be nice to have insurance. Most track policies have a 10% deductible though. I guess if I had a really expensive car that I was tracking more than 20-30 times a year at DEs with unknown drivers I would consider an unlimited policy which probably costs around $7k a year. It’s probably worth piece of mind and definitely worth it if you total your car, but not worth it financially otherwise. If you’re really worried and don’t mind the premium I’d get it.

I just shopped track insurance....in a nut shell I found that if you're going to do 10 or more track events (events are 2 days) the theopentrack .com deal works in your favor cost wise. However keep in mind that OpenTrack.com will not refund any money for example if you only do a couple events and you are unable to go to anymore events with in the year of the policy.

If you're doing say under 8-10 events a year Haggerty was much less expensive than any other HPDE insurance company I found this week.

The nice thing about open track is that you wont forget to sign up for insurance for an event
