Default The one thread about helmets!

Searched the forum and didnt find anything.

So i need a good helmet for tracking.

All info i can get would be great.

Are "open" (for the chin) not as good as full integral helmets?

Can't go wrong with Stilo, Arai, Bell, Simpson or Schuberth helmets.

I highly advise a HANS device if you have a 4 point or a 6 point harness. Otherwise, a "Simpson Hybrid" makes a hans type device that straps to your torso and can be used with a conventional 3 point belt. Either one of those two is highly recommended.

Open face or closed face is a personal preference.

Stand21 is the "king of the helmets" and also other racing gear.
They do also official Porsche collection ...

You can't use you open face helmets for karting or open cockpit cars ! If you do either of those, closed face is your best choice !

Whatever you do, make sure you try several on. Fit among different brands can vary quite a bit depending what type of cabeza you have.

Fit is most important so try several. Arai is best for me. Lighter weight is better. Stand 21 custom would be great but big bucks. In USA we have to drive windows down so I prefer full face as I've been hit by rubber, rocks, bugs through the window. With 6pt harness frontal head restraint (hans, others) is a must. With 3 pt belts the Simpson Hybrid FIA has been tested to reduce neck loads in a frontal crash.

I like the Stilo open face helmets.

Visits are rarely closed in closed cockpit cars and down here with the ancient, dangerous, stupid mandatory all windows down rules it's simply to hot..
I have 2 Stilo WRC's both bought from Clark at Apex Performance.

Make sure you try on a few different brands. Certain manufacturers fit certain head shapes better. I've only ever had a full face helmet so speaking mainly about those. I can't wear a Simpson because it presses too hard on my forehead but I can wear an Arai for extended periods of time with no issues. I've had plenty of stints in a helmet for 8+ hours without being able to take it off. I've tried some where I had a horrible headache after 20 minutes from pressure points and hot spots.

While we are on the subject - I need to replace my Arai GP-5W SA2005, which I love. Does anybody that might have done this already know if the SA2015 fits the same? And if they will ever make it in something other than white? (There were at least 4-5 choices back when I got mine.)

The SA15 Arai's seem to be fitting the same as the older styles. I believe just white is available right now but can see if they have black. There was talk about doing some models in black but not sure of status.

I have 2 custom Stand 21 and fit is excellent. I went with open face but they offer closed as well all fully certified.

Arai said, "They could make them in a variety of colors but need an order for about 100 to do it. They tried black, red, yellow, etc in the past but didn’t sell enough to justify it."

Your only solution would be to get a white one and get it painted if you need one sooner rather than later.

I highly recommend Arai. I recently got a GP6 which is awesome. Light and fit & quality is excellent. I had a few GP5's before which i also loved.

I have a Stand21 full face I use mostly.

Experience from going from open helmet to fullface:

Chewing gum in the FF is painful: You take bites of yourself and difficult to spit out the gum

Drinking water is difficult in FF: I use a hydration system with the FF

God forbid if you need to but poking you nose is almost impossible in the FF - maybe a good thing

Eating a banana in FF is doable but you should consider cleaning the helmet asap

Putting on the 6pt harness takes some training to do since you can't see what you are doing

Seeing what buttons you selected on the center console is doable but you have to turn down your head a lot to actually see something. Wife laughed her a**' off in th ebeginning - she thought I looked like weird bird poking my head a round

You here the engine as good with the Stand21 helmet. This both good and bad.

If I prefer FF or OH?

I like both.
